The vehicle was turning left onto Danforth westbound. It was nearly 8 p.m and well after dark but these circumstances mean the vehicle approached the victim from in front of her. She was hit and dragged a sort distance. Police are appealing for witnesses and/or video of this occurrence. Police tweet.

Keyless technology used to steal three Lexus cars in Leaside

A resident writes at Leaside Community that he witnessed the theft of a Lexus model SUV taken from  Airdrie Rd. and Rolph Rd. in recent hours. He says there were two other such thefts from the same driveway at Bessborough Ave. and  Sutherland Drive., The good part is that the writer saw a license plate and has given information to the police. These thefts  of expensive vehicles seems to rely on the electronic lifting of keyless entry technology, something that is done by thieves who are near enough to you while you open your car in their presence. Such a wonderful age we live in. The FB thread is very long and informative. There is no substitute for a locked garage.

Letter to Councillor on Moore Ave. instability at Mud Creek

Hugh Grant of the Bennington Heights Residents’ Association has written to Councillor Robinson (Ward 15) about the depression in the eastbound lane of Moore Ave at Mud Creek, and about the general instability that has marked this location for many years. His letter notes a brief history:

In 2009, a two-year rebuilding program for Moore Avenue was initiated. The plan was to install a new water main in year one, and the road structure and streetscape was slated for complete renewal in year two.

The City Of Toronto engineer assigned to drive the process, Tom Millis was concerned that roadway sinkage/collapse at Mud Creek had been an issue for many years, and upon investigation the plan for renewal of Moore Avenue was delayed pending engineering diagnostics at this location followed by rebuilding of the foundation.

It is understood that Mud Creek as the name implies was a ravine with running water (at right angles to the road today). City archives show that the ravine used to be host to the Belt Line rail track. Early last century there was no east-west road connecting Leaside to Moore Park. Eventually, a wooden bridge was built, facilitating a road link.

Many years later the bridge was replaced by infilling the ravine and building a black top road along what is now Moore Avenue

We have lived here since 1995, and from 1995 to 2009 had witnessed several attempts by City engineers to overcome the continuous sinking of the road by putting fresh fill down each time to build the surface up

Tom Millis’ investigation found that the road today has a culvert running underneath, carrying the original ground water. The linkages of the components of the culvert were not in good shape and water was “finding its way” back into the creek. Progressively this had eroded the “foundations” of the road causing the perennial sinking.

In 2009 Tom had Toronto Water work on this with the aim of completely rectifying this structural problem before the two-year Moore Avenue rebuild commenced (completed September 2010)

I have spoken to Tom Millis who now works for the Regional Municipality of York. Tom recalls the original project and the problems encountered. If it is useful to speak with Tom his number is 1 877 464 9675 ext 75598

Tom suggested we speak with Kimmo Hamalainen Manager of Local Roads at the Engineering department of Toronto. We spoke on the phone today. Kimmo checked and discovered by using Google Earth that there does appear to have been a recurrence of sinking of the eastbound lane at Mud Creek since 2014

Millwood Rd. at underpass repaved, hope of road reopening

Millwood Rd. has been repaved Wednesday morning but the southbound lane under the railway tracks at Redway Rd. remained closed late Wednesday evening. It appears that the road needs cleaning from the heavy mud created by the repair of a watermain Tuesday. Earlier story.

Update on injured at Pusha-T melee at Danforth Music Hall

Police have updated the injuries sustained at the Pusha-T concert at the Danforth Music Hall on Tuesday night. Five were hurt and one has “very serious injuries.” The violence is widely believed to have been caused by the feud between Drake and Pusha-T, who was performing. Danforth was closed from Playter Blvd. to Broadview Ave. for a period of time..Pusha T and Drake have had a running feud since earlier this year. The shots reached a nasty low when Pusha T released The Story of Adidon. The tune is a 3-minute diss track, which touches on everything from Drake’s childhood to an alleged secret baby.

The information with this video, which was shot by someone named Main Man Music, says: “Pusha T was half way through his set when several (Drake) fans threw beer on stage then proceed to try to get on stage to 1V1 Pusha T. After the fight was over and the stage was cleaned, Push finished his show early with Infrared Mercy and Dont Like. Police were called to the Danforth Music hall where the show was.” A comment on YouTube said the whole thing “figures” if you are Pusher T in Drake’s hometown.

New hybrid buses generate electricity from diesel engines

Mayor Tory was praising the new clean energy hybrid-electric TTC buses Tuesday. They go into service this month (video below). Though these vehicles are still using fuel (diesel) to produce energy, they use a lot less than the average vehicle. Hybrid buses also incorporate the recovery of braking energy, meaning that energy produced when descending a hill or during braking is fed back to the energy storage system to reuse for propulsion, resulting in approximately 25% fuel reduction and in turn, reduced tailpipe emissions. The TTC plans to have 55 hybrid buses delivered by the end of 2018 and 200 more hybrid buses delivered by the end of 2019. The TTC has also ordered 60 all-electric buses from a Winnipeg supplier These vehicles re-charge along the route at overhead feeders.

How to win a bonspiel? Stay sober and don’t break brooms

A Canadian Olympic gold medallist who was kicked out of the Red Deer Curling Classic over the weekend along with three of his teammates was “breaking brooms and swearing” after the squad showed up to the rink drunk, according to one of the tournament organizers. The incident happened Saturday, when the curling team of Jamie Koe, Ryan Fry, Chris Schille, and DJ Kidby were scheduled to curl at 4:30 p.m. “I don’t know if they were drinking before they got here. I think a lot of us assume they were drinking before they got here; but, they had some booze upstairs and it came time to curl,” said Wade Thurber, manager of the Red Deer Curling Centre. “Jamie Koe was too drunk to play so he didn’t even play. So, they’re curling three-handed and in particular (Fry) was having anger management issues, we’ll call it, breaking brooms and swearing and kind of causing a scene.” Thurber said Fry broke three brooms, disrupting games going on beside him — Calgary Herald

Man has broken leg in hit-run by car on McCowan Tuesday

A man in his 20s who is said to have been “dashing” across McCowan Rd. about 1.30 a.m. Tuesday has suffered a broken leg after being struck by a hit and run vehicle. The man had apparently been at a bank ATM near Lawrence Ave. The victim’s brother says the car was possibly a dark-coloured Mercedes. Police searched the street but found no debris left behind and can’t guarantee the description of the car is accurate since there are no cameras or other witnesses.
