Crown drops animal cruelty charges against Marineland

All charges of animal cruelty against Marineland have been withdrawn by the Crown because it believes there is no reasonable chance of conviction on most of the 11 counts. During a brief hearing in Niagara Falls Thursday, the Crown said it could have proceeded on three of the charges but did not believe it was in the public interest to do so. The OSPCA disagreed with the Crown’s decision, saying in a statement to CBC News that it was not informed of the decision until after the court proceedings. “We are extremely disappointed in this outcome and feel that this matter is of public interest as all animals rely on humans for appropriate care for their general welfare and the public demands this,” said Alison Cross, spokesperson for the OSPCA. Marineland has said that the complaints which led to the charges were made by a disgruntled former employee and misguided animal rights activists.

US plan for non-nuclear weapons strike on NK missile sites

It’s all quite concerning. The North Koreans say they are preparing a plan to fire missiles into the water a few miles off the beaches of Guam, the US territory in the Pacific. Now NBC reporter Cynthia McFadden has this detailed description of how a preemptive strike against North Korean missile sites would work. Very informative.

Hundreds waiting at Davisville as Line 1 slows to a crawl

The TTC is full of apologies Thursday for the colossal slowdown of service and crowds waiting for trains. Thousands more just gave up and walked to work. The explanation offered is that somehow overnight work to replace the 1950s signal system went off the tracks causing the signal system to give false messages to trains. Human error. One crisis point was Davisville Station. The top photo was tweeted shortly before 9.30 by Robert Lawson showing hundreds waiting at Davisville. The second, showing no room, is from Tweeter JuanCa Sarmiento

Red light camera gets all confused as man turns right on red

This is quite a good story from City News telling how a newly-installed red light camera at Danforth Rd. and Eglinton Ave. E. confused a legal right hand turn with an illegal blow through. Apparently the cameras don’t see too well.

Mob bikers disrupt, frighten community over long weekend

Toronto is again being bullied by mob bikers who flout traffic laws, disrupt traffic and spread fear. OPP say at least one gang was loose on area roads over the weekend, bringing back bad memories of several such incidents last fall and earlier this year. It’s not clear whether cops are starting from scratch in their search for the perpetrators, but they are calling for the public to make the most intense search for information, pictures, videos and anything else that will lead to arrests. This weekend, OPP had numerous complaints of a large group of bikers behaving in a dangerous manner on GTA highways. They say the incidents occurred on August 6 between 12:30 p.m. and 2:30 p.m. on Highways 409, 401, 403, the Queen Elizabeth Way, Don Valley Parkway and Gardiner Express Way. “Riders were operating their motorcycles in an aggressive manner shutting down sections of the highway causing major traffic disruptions to rally and perform stunts,” said the OPP. Biker in crash, burn as gang takes over Mississauga roads  Bike gang taunts cops in daylight stunting beside cruiser

Boy made normal by donations plus, a jogger’s entitlement

The video wheel begins with the absolutely touching story of Nathan Box of Hornchurch east of London. He had an enormous brain tumour that could only be removed by surgeons in the US. More than 3,300 people, most of whom had never met Nathan or his parents, raised in excess of £100,00 to send the boy to Texas and pay for the operation.  Wonderful. Next, an update on the pushy jogger on London’s Putney Bridge who nearly cost a woman her life. It looks more and more like his aggressive behaviour was about his entitlement to use the sidewalk for jogging. Her job was to get off the sidewalk so he could jog as God intended — or die for her arrogance. Below that, some choice lunacy in Poland where a car blasts through a railway barrier and is narrowly missed by a speeding train. The occupants disembark and carry on like nothing happened. Finally, Jeane Moos of CNN with the very funny story of the car seat that acts like a driver.

Snaps from past and present, Beer Here on Dupont Street

Rob and Pam Horwood are seen back in 1992 when they started their tennis store on Bayview Ave. Who knew they would still be at it and that Merchant of Tennis would be one of the all-time anchor businesses of South Bayview. Then, MP Rob Oliphant tweets about a visit to Loblaws (Moore Ave. or Redway Rd?) while Sam Smith @SamSonYYZ is complaining about cars blocking the buses at Davisville Station. (You a bus driver, Sam?)  Below, Beer Here adorns Loblaws on Dupont St. at this revolutionary innovation in the sale of lager.

Water tanker rolls on 401, eastbound lanes shut at Whitby

All eastbound lanes on Highway 401 just east of Lake Ridge Road near Whitby are closed due to a crash involving a truck carrying water that rolled over, according to the Ontario Provincial Police. Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said the tanker spilled some of its water onto the highway. It’s unknown when the eastbound lanes will reopen, he said. Police have not received reports of any injuries in the rollover.
