Leaside Junior Wildcats lost 2-0 to the Etobicoke Dolphins Wednesday night in a regular season game in the Provincial Women’s Hockey League. The Wildcats fell behind at the beginning of the third on a Dolphins power play. The second goal was scored on an empty net at the end of the third.
Loblaws penny-pinching credited with solid 3Q results
by •
Lower prices and general penny-pinching at Loblaw’s are credited for solid third quarter sales. The venerable retailer reported a 1.4 per cent rise in revenue in the third quarter ended Oct. 8 to $14.14 billion, up from $13.95 billion a year ago. Loblaws program of kicking out brand items that don’t sell fast enough is a daily phenomenon for staff and customers alike. Can’t blame them perhaps but sometimes the firm retreats. That would seem to be the case with Silk brand soy milk which vanished abruptly a couple of years ago. Silk has now found its way back. It was a strange choice for removal because it is among the best-selling of such drinks. Maybe it was just a shot across the manufacturer’s bow on cost. Recently Planters Peanuts saw its pecan line gone from Loblaws shelves. It’s true the tasty nuts are expensive. But it is a daily guessing game for loyal Loblaws customers as to what will be there tomorrow and what will not.

LPOA agenda to discuss Sunnybrook Plaza, Eglinton zoning
by •
The agenda of the Leaside Property Owners Association annual meeting next Tuesday (November 22, 2016) has some important items on it. The news release today from LPOA says an agreement is imminent between the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) and LPOA on the height of towers and other specifications of the redevelopment of Sunnybrook Plaza. This information is not yet public. The release notes the appeal by LPOA has mounted against the City for deciding to zone a stretch of Eglinton east Hanna to townhouses and the stretch of Eglinton between Sutherland and Laird midrise buildings up to eight storeys “by right” as well. There will be a round table on the merits of the Committee of Adjustment. The meeting is set for the William Lea room on the Nov 22 starting at 7 p.m. LPOA
Buy and sell sun shines on both sides of Bayview Avenue
by •
Response has been rewarding to the post about the concern (in Leaside) that some members of the Leaside Community Facebook page wanted keep the buy-sell service to themselves. So many people thought this wrong and wrote about the nature of the larger community. Another reader wrote to announce that some residents have started Davisville Leaside Buy and Sell. The name speaks for itself. And thank you all for the reminder that the sun shines on both sides of Bayview Ave.
Sarah and Claire’s Drive collected 78,000 pounds of food
by •
Lynda DeBono has written with good news about this year’s Annual Sarah and Claire’s Food Drive. The generous and energetic efforts of friends in all directions delivered 78,000 pounds of food, 28,000 pounds more than the campaign target. Lynda reports that this brings the all-time efforts of local citizens each year to more than 293,000 pounds of food raised for Daily Bread Food Bank since 2008. She shouts out to students, parents, teachers and residents in the Leaside, Davisville Village, Bennington Heights, Lawrence Park, Don Mills and Riverdale communities for all of their selfless efforts. The Bulldog will steal a line to say the same to all and express admiration for the leadership of Lynda and Mark and their two caring daughters.
Hard hat guy explodes with racial venom on streetcar
by •
An encounter on a streetcar between a man in a hard hat and a brown-skinned man has been filmed by a another rider who is identified by the CBC as Valeska Griffiths. The hard hat guy is full of anger and racial venom. He also says he was punched by the other man but the CBC reports that Ms. Griffiths says she did not see such a blow. The streetcar was on the St Clair line in the west end. Not a very uplifting experience but part — a small part we hope — of life in Toronto. You can see the video at the CBC newsite.
