Liberals ran a poll to learn people hated power rates

It is being reported that the Ontario’s Liberal government commissioned a poll which showed that 94 per cent of residents were eager for relief from the cost of electricity. Then they pledged to lower rates. The poll’s outcome can hardly be news to anyone. The process seems a lot like asking people if taxes are too high. What seems just too unfortunate is that the government couldn’t figure out that it has driven the cost of power in Ontario to crushingly high levels without a poll.  Were they expecting results which said rates were just ducky? Reader is excited to see how Laird and Eglinton transforms

Reader “KSnider” has commented that Laird in Focus is of interest because Laird and Eglinton “is a useful nexus for residents as far away as Yonge & Eg to use as a retail and services area. There are tens of thousands of apartment and condo residents geared up to spend even more time in that area post-crosstown construction. The area needs to be zoned appropriately to accommodate all those people, and the commerce it will provide. I’m excited to see how the area will transform. :)” Thanks for the opinion.

Laird in Focus? Open House attempts to sharpen image

There’s will be a series of public presentations conducted within a single meeting at Leaside United Church on Wednesday, November 30, 2016. It is about the future of Laird Drive and the lands on the southeast corner of Eglinton East and Laird. That’s the RioCan Leaside Centre and property to the east. It is called Laird in Focus and it will begin at 4 p.m. in an “open house” context with presentations on the hour until 8 p.m. It seems this is less a chance to tell the City what you might like than simply be told what the planers are intending to do — within their power — the land is all privately owned. They say the intent is to “develop a planning framework to guide future development for the Laird Focus Area that also includes the Mixed Use Areas along the west side of Laird Drive.” Read it all here.

Amazon told to pay millions after kids buy virtual apps

A judge in Washington state has ordered Amazon to pay refunds to the parents of children who made in-app purchases on Kindle and Android devices without their consent between 2011 and 2014. Seems the kids didn’t know the difference between “virtual money” (whatever that is) and hard cash that mom and dad had to find somewhere. Fancy that. Judge John Coughenour ordered the firm to run the refund process for 12 months beginning in January 2017. The decision comes as the result of legal action by the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC). However the FTC’s call for a lump refund of $25.6m U.S. was rejected. He also turned down Amazon’s request to offer reimbursement in the form of gift cards.  The option of paying for extra content inside mobile apps such as games and music platforms was launched by Amazon and other platforms in 2011. Parents complained that it was too easy for children to make purchases, either by accident or without authorisation, while playing game — with BBC

Sights, sounds, friends, neighbours at St. Cuthbert’s Fair

St .Cuthbert’s Christmas Fair was a busy event Saturday with wonderful oddments and other things not so odd for sale. The South Bayview Bulldog chose Hermit Cookies for the office (not the lifestyle) at the bake counter. Lorna Krawchuk confirmed the number waiting outside Lamb Hall at 11 a.m. opening was 224 this chilly morning and that one man was waiting there at 8.30 or so when she arrived to turn on the coffee makers. Hope you got the bargain you were looking for sir. This is the scene inside the main meeting room/auditorium during lunch.

Former Subway and Mac’s fondly remembered by some

The new Eglinton Crosstown LRT and its magnificent new stations are much on the minds (and in the speeches) of politicians, but generations remember (and miss) the convenient Subway and Mac’s that stood at Avenue Rd. and Eglinton Ave. West.

WORLD: Giuliani talked of as U.S. Secretary of State

The former  mayor of New York City, Rudy Guiliani, is being discussed as a possible U.S. Secretary of State or Attorney General. Giulini cleaned up New York City during the late 90s and was considered a hero for his management of the 9-11 crisis which occurred during his period in office. Diwali, the Indian Festival of Lights recently celebrated will be the focus of a CNN program this week. There are some lovely images in the promotional video. Equally enchanting are images of a new polar bear at the Chicago Zoo.

To wrap up Your World this Saturday, Robert Redford, now 80, will suffer the fate of many movie idols by becoming a director and the ever-eventful Facebook has fixed a problem which mysteriously turned personal pages into notices that the user was dead.
