First October Apple Fest this Saturday and Sunday

By Cecelia Pye
Special to the South Bayview Bulldog

The Bayview Leaside BIA is hosting the first-ever October Apple Fest. This festival is a celebration of everything apple to pay tribute to the apple orchards that once graced our neighbourhood, like the Lea and Lawrence family farms. The Lea family maintained a large apple orchard on their 200-acre farm. The Lawrence family farms on the west also boast a rich history in apples.

October Apple Fest will take place this Saturday, October 22 and Sunday October 23 from 11 am to 5 pm along Bayview Avenue from Davisville Avenue to Soudan Avenue. There will be apple décor, apple cider and apple specialties. Feast your eyes on apple street art by the Toronto-based chalk artist Victor (#WhatsVictorUpTo). Listen to the sweet sounds of musicians playing both violin and banjo along Bayview Avenue, as well as a special student duet at Cavatina Violin Studio. Find the apple in your eye in the apple décor created by the Bayview Pixies.

There will be a number of a-peel-ing events and treats from the BIA members including salted apple caramel scones from Lit Espresso Bar, apple martinis at Original’s, apple treats for dogs at the Leaside Animal Clinic, apple spread at Dolce & Gourmando, cold pressed apple juice from Refuel Juice Bar and appletree smoked cheddar at Alex’s Farm Products.

There is also a special kids crafts and Lego drop off event at Bamboo Bay. Kids can build and create apple art for an hour and a half while parents are free to shop and stop for a bite to eat.

Don’t be a crab apple and join the fun at October Apple Fest!

Judge dismisses bid to ban the word Indians from ALCS

Well worth reading for those who care to know. Among the many notable arguments is the position of the lawyer, hastily hired by the Cleveland team at the last minute, that the word Indians is a benign description not a racist attack. Globe and Mail.

Ontario Teachers buys Wine Rack, vintner for $1.03 bln.

The Ontario Teachers’ Pension Plan will buy Constellation Brands Canada, the owner of a chain of 163 wine stores formerly operated by Vincor Canada for $1.03 billion. Constellation’s domestic and international wines include brand names including Inniskillin, Jackson-Triggs, Kim Crawford, Robert Mondavi, Ruffino, Sawmill Creek and Wallaroo Trail. But it is the protected freedom to sell wine widely at retail, a right grandfathered with Vincor and its successors since the introduction of free trade in 1988, that makes the company so unique.  Ontario Teachers’ is the largest single-profession pension plan with $171.4 billion in net assets as of Dec. 31, 2015.

Some British fleeing Brexit effect with a German passport

Many British subjects, a lot of them Jewish, are applying for German passports. As the report above says, it is a development that would have been unthinkable a few decades ago. This is said to be the consequence of the expected impact of Brexit on the UK economy. In the U.S., and further to yesterday’s story that polls show Donald Trump losing, a new “poll of polls” reveals Clinton sitting at 47 percent with Trump at 39 percent. In Iraq, it seems the government is finally about to reconquer the town of Mosul from ISIS. The military says it has inflicted “heavy losses of life and equipment” on ISIS in a district southeast of Mosul, as Iraqi-led forces close in on the city in the long-awaited battle to recapture it from the terror group.

Laurence out abruptly at Rogers to make way for Joe Natale

Rogers has announced what some are calling the abrupt and immediate resignation of president and CEO Guy Laurence. He has been with the firm less than three years. Laurence is credited with improving Rogers competitive position and the stunning 12-year rights deal with the NHL. His replacement will be former Telus chief executive Joe Natale who resigned from Telus last summer because, he said, he didn’t want to move to Vancouver. Hmm. Polls seem to show Trump cannot beat Hillary Clinton

polls-us-560

With barely three weeks left before the U.S. general election on Tuesday, November 8, polls seem to show that Donald Trump cannot win. Many people would say that this has been apparent for some time but the media has been interested in making the election look close. The NBC/Wall Street Journal poll (top) indicates an eleven point margin between Clinton and Trump with nearly ten percent of the vote leaning to the splinter Libertarian and Green parties. The Washington Post/ABC News poll (lower) shows Clinton four percent ahead of Trump with five percent of potential Republican votes going to the Libertarians.
