Some people are calling it a hoax but it looks all too real. Franky Zapata, the remarkable Fenchman who invented the Hoverboard, has flown the Flyboard Air. A few days ago, somewhere near Marseilles, he travelled the sky in sci-fi fashion. It was the triumph of nearly two years work by Zapata. The rider carries a backpack of fuel and a remote control to manage the four jet engines that keep him a loft. Here’s a caution. It is easier to fall off of than a Hoverboard and take months to learn how to fly.

The vacant store at 1559 Bayview Ave previously the home of Aish Jewellers has been leased, sources tell The South Bayview Bulldog. The new tenant’s name is yet to come but it is one more store which will be doing business on South Bayview this summer.

Reuters says that Rogers Communications posted a first-quarter profit on Monday that was down 2.75 per cent from a year ago. Rogers calls it “restructuring” and maybe it is but the slowness in business at the media division is also hurting. Still, Rogers is  quoted as saying it will hit its 2016 financial targets. The company said it had net income of C$248-million, or 48 Canadian cents a share, in the three months to March 31, down from C$255-million, or 50 Canadian cents a share, a year earlier

Hotel California

Residents of the pleasant neighborhood of Moore Park may well be complaining about how similar life there is to staying at the Hotel California. That’s the 1977 Eagles reflection on the nature of being able to check out any time you like but never, ever being permitted to leave. Well okay, it is possible to actually get out of Moore Park heading east but not between 4 and 6 p.m. There’s the long-standing no right turn requirement at Welland and Moore Aves and now the sewer construction at the corner of Mt. Pleasant Rd. and Moore. It’s pretty much like life at the Hotel California.

Demolition all along the Eglinton crosstown LRT line has been temporarily stopped after Monday’s collapse at Eglinton and Bathburst. The front of the former House of Chan restaurant and scaffolding fell into the street injuring seven people including an infant. The child was apparently only slightly injured inside the stroller even though it is said to have been heavily damaged by debris. All injuries were minor The accident happened about 2.20 without warning. The House of Chan was just west of Bathurst on the north side of Eglinton. The place was enormously popular over many decades as was the China House restaurant across the street. Metrolinx chair Robert Prichard was heard to quip that maybe it should be called “House of Chan Station.”

St Cuthbert’s Anglican Church Spring Fair will be held Saturday, April 30, 2016 from from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The spacious area of Lamb Hall and its many smaller rooms will again be packed with art, books, CDs and other recordings, crafts, knitting, sewing, quilting, jewellery, kitchenware, electrical, treasures, stamps, toys and tombola. A tombola is a lottery generated by a rolling drum of sorts and happily is not as drawn out as a tontine. A particular favorite of The Bulldog is the bake table which this year is said to have an 1890s theme. There is always lots of food as well. There will be barbecue on the Green and many activities for children. See you at the fair.

Take a moment and watch the astonishing agility of these Taiwanese kids as they show off the skill that has won them eleven gold medals at the sport of Stacking. Yes, such a thing exists and it is a wonder to witness the championship reflexes at work. At a training session on Sunday, athletes of the Taiwan branch of the World Sport Stacking Association practicing included 15-year-old Yang Chu-chun, who took home four medals in Germany and is the fastest female in her age group. Reuters

Catastrophe has been averted after a drone struck a British Airways jetliner arriving from Geneva at Heathrow Airport. By luck, the drone bounced off the plane’s nose cone but a few inches higher, or to the side, might have sent it into cockpit or one of the engines. Aviation authorities say such an incident could easily lead to circumstances that would cause the plane to crash.

Police say a four-year-old Aurora girl was inside her father’s van when it rolled over near Pembroke Monday morning. The man and his daughter have been the subject of a province-wide search since he abducted her from her mother’s home in York Region overnight  The circumstances are uncertain and the child’s condition is not known. York Region Police Twitter 

This fine bunch of guys won bronze at the Ontario Volleyball Association finals over the weekend. Nice going.
