Leaside’s Martha McCabe has won a spot on the Canadian Swimming Team at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio at the qualifying event in Toronto last night. The trip to Rio will mark McCabe’s second shot at Olympic glory, as the 26-year-old also competed at the London games in 2012. The Leaside Sports Hall of Fame member is an alumnus of the UBC Thunderbirds swim team. Her friends and family celebrated her success last night after she qualified

A second incident of a child falling through the rear hatch of a van has emerged in China. Both cases are wrapped up in this video. It seems likely given the rarity of child safety seats that more kids have unlatched the cargo door and dropped out onto the road. Some surveys say that fewer than half a percent of children in China are properly belted in place. Amazing.
Complaints about misleading ads for inexpensive clothes on Facebook has brought a concession from Facebook’s VP of ads and pages, Andrew Bosworth, that the firm acknowledges the problem. He says: “We’re looking at ways to incorporate new signals that will help us identify which of the over 50 million active businesses on our platform are delivering products and services that are overwhelmingly unsatisfactory to people.” This is recorded on the consumer site Consumerist with a link to an expose by CBS News in Dallas. A reporter there bought four items (above). They all had problems. Some were putrid, didn’t fit, shapeless or coming apart at the seams. Often the advertised material — leather, wool — was not. In short, they were not what was ordered.

It has been confirmed by The Bulldog that Cumbrae’s butcher shop has taken a lease on the large space at 1591 Bayview Ave and will move its South Bayview store to that location in the months to come. At present, Cumbrae’s is a veteran of the street with its busy store located at 1636 Bayview. Senior staff say they have been told that over a period of several months, the dynamic high-end meat and specialty food retailer will convert the large space, which was once a TD Bank branch, to the complex environment needed for a sophisticated butcher shop. Immediate speculation has centred on the use of space and such things as a loading dock, the placement of generators and storage facilities for perishable meat.
Cumbrae’s is owned by an area resident, Stephen Alexander, a butcher by trade as was his father. Alexander is Australian by birth and started his first store on Church Street. Now there are four locations including the original on Church as well as 714 Queen Street West and 26 King Street West in Dundas, a location that trades with affluent families in Ancaster. Mr. Alexander (inset above) has been called a “dashing figure” by the Globe and Mail for his style and enterprise.
The decision by Cumbrae’s to expand on Bayview will be an important boost for the street as a destination for local shoppers and those from further afield. Next door to 1591 is Badali’s Fruit Market, the longest standing business on the street. The owner, Sal Badali is delighted with the idea of a Cumbrae’s next door He laughed that it would have been good 20 years ago. The name Cumbrae is Scottish in origin but it is not known how that applies to the store name. Two islands off the western coast in the Firth of Clyde are known as The Cumbraes.
The venerable Leaside Lawn Bowling Club at 190 Hanna Road will hold its annual open house on Friday May 13 from 7 to 9 p.m. and again on Saturday, May 14 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers invite all to take a little exercise and fresh air, refreshments and fun. This picture is a capture of security video on the Bloor/Danforth line. A woman says the man seen in it put his hand in her lap twice after he sat down beside her. It happened in March at midday as the woman, 23, was heading west on the subway. The man then got off the train at Kipling Station. He is described as between 25 and 35 years-old with brown hair in a ponytail. He was seen wearing beige pants, a black jacket, brown boots and a beige baseball cap worn backwards. He was carrying a black computer bag.
