The 150-foot harbor bay cruis ship San Diego Hornblower lost control of rearward propulsion and slammed into the dock where dozens of tourists and sightseers were waiting. Everyone on shore scattered and one man can be seen helping an elderly woman to get out of the way. Passengers aboard suffered minor injuries as they were thrown to the deck by the collision with the dock.
Here is a scary bit of video of a woman driving the wrong way on Highway 401 near Kitchener on Saturday afternoon. It was posted on Facebook but this version is embedded from Global News. The couple shooting the video are quite terrified and call OPP. “It looks like an elderly lady and she’s driving very fast in the right hand lane shoulder,” the woman can be heard saying to police. Police stopped the driver without incident. Amazing.
The Leaside Hockey Association minor peewee division (girls and boys 10 and 11) had a playoff Saturday on April 2, 2016 and it was the South Bayview Bulldog (Bulldogs) team versus Humphrey’s VIP squad for top honours. There were three games on the Bert F. Grant rink at Leaside Gardens for 5th place, 3rd place and for 1st place. After a hard-fought three periods it was Humphrey’s collecting gold with the Bulldogs taking silver. Final score was VIPs 6, Bulldogs 4. Leaside Jr Wildcats played a winning final exhibition game of the season at home Saturday evening defeating the Cambridge Rivulettes 4 to 3 in overtime. It was a well-played game by both teams and a high note on which to leave fans for the year. See you in the fall ladies. Boxscore

At least two people have died and dozens injured after a motorway pile up in China’s eastern Jiangsu province between Shanghai and Nanjing. A traffic police officer said at least two trucks, three buses and twenty cars were involved.

Tory promised to do his best to promote a major league baseball franchise for Montreal. The days of Montreal Expos lost glory must hang heavy over the St. Lawrence. What this Entente Cordiale may truly accomplish is unknown but it couldn’t hurt. The words of officialdom say it “paves the way” for Montreal and Toronto to share information and best practices in five specific areas: governance, economic vitality, the environment, social development and living together. The owners of Celestin, the long-standing French restaurant at Mt. Pleasant Rd. and Manor Rd. have decided to close it at the end of April and re-open shortly thereafter as a Latin-themed restaurant and bar. They have announced as well that Celestin will be offering a Tasting Menu for the last two weeks of April offering classics and favourites from Celestin’s menu. Brothers James and Iván Bailey, who have owned Celestin since 2009, will take the old bank building at 623 Mt. Pleasant into a familiar world of South American cuisine. Both were born and raised in Lima, Peru and the change is a heartfelt decision in keeping with their heritage. James was telling the South Bayview Bulldog that the new restaurant will be called Bar Mar which translates roughly into Ocean Bar. It would seem a good bet that most people would know enough not to send an image of their driver’s license by Twitter or whatever but that apparently is what happened in a scam now underway in Toronto. The victim was trying to re-sell tickets on Kijiji and was asked by a perp to send his license as proof. (Proof of what?). Anyway, the poor ticket seller is now being impersonated on the Internet and maybe Kijiji too. Sorry buddy.

A 22-year-old man is dead from several bullet wounds in a service station lot at Richmond Street and Parliament Street at about 2 a.m. There appears to be very few leads and police have called the matter a “big puzzle” so far.

The Weather Network says an abrupt pattern change will result in plunging temperatures and a couple of threats for impactful snowfall across southern Ontario through the weekend and into early next week. A pair of weak low pressure areas brought the first bouts of snow Saturday throughout the day, with the most substantial snowfall expected Sunday afternoon through the overnight before the system dissipates Monday morning. So, after a relatively warm March the start of April is marked by a return to winter-like weather.
Starbucks has announced that three Toronto locations will start serving wine, beer and sharable small plates beginning at 2 p.m. next Tuesday, April 12, 2016. Starbucks has teased the idea for what seems like years and it does this elsewhere. Now they will commence it at 3079 Bloor St. W., 446 Spadina Rd. and 1740 Avenue Rd. These well off areas although 446 Spadina in Chinatown is new for Starbucks. The Bloor Street West location is in the affluent Royal York Rd. shopping district at Montgomery Rd and the Avenue Rd. location is at St. German Ave. north of Pusateri’s (when it re-opens).
