Alternate routes from Leaside Transformer Station to Todmorden Jct

An information meeting at the William Lea Room Wednesday night (February 10, 2016) offered an opportunity for the public to learn of a Hydro One refurbishment project which will originate at the Leaside Transformer Station (LTS). The project in full will replace underground cable located between LTS and Todmorden Junction, as well as a second leg of underground service from Lumsden Junction and Main TS. Overhead shield wire used to protect lines above-ground from lightning be replaced between Todmorden and Lumsden Junctions.

TWO ROUTES ASSESSED

Hydro One is assessing two routes for the delivery of power from LTS. One would follow the existing but outdated underground line shown in black on the map. It tracks Millwood Road for quite a distance from the transformer station. The other, shown on the map in red, would descend into the ravine and take a more circuitous overhead route to Todmorden. This route would be less disruptive of street traffic but would require a right of way through some forested land. An assessment is being done.

MEETING IN SPRING OF 2016

Project Manager Dima Ostrovsky told the South Bayview Bulldog that the most likely start date is Spring of 2017.  Hydro One intends to have another public meeting in May or June of this year to again seek public input. The utility is inviting inquiries to:

De Baeremaeker declares UberX is illegal, unfair and unsafe

Municipal officials have been successful in persuading militant taxi drivers to postpone a demonstration against UberX taxis that would paralyze downtown during NBA celebrations this weekend. There has been a stream of statements from officials such as the Mayor and many Councillors, as well as taxi boses, against a demonstration. At the same, many have spoken out against UberX, and criticized the Mayor, who they feel does not have his heart in opposition to the renegade taxi firm.  This is what Councillor Glenn De Baeremaeker (Ward 38) said at a news conference as he was flanked by drivers and Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam (Ward 27)

Wartime sweethearts meet and embrace 70 years later

couple 550 w inset

Norwood Thomas and Joyce Morris got together again in Adelaide, Australia this week and gave each a hug just like the old days 70 years ago. That’s when “Tommy” was a dashing U.S. paratrooper getting ready to invade Europe, and Joyce was a sweet 17 London girl, who, as it turns out, Tommy would never forget. War being what it is, both went on to marry others. But now, single and with their memories, they fulfilled a growing desire to see each other again and recall the few weeks they shared back in 1944.

Durham West Lightning drub Leaside Wildcats 3-0 in Ajax

Durham West Lightning exacted a kind revenge on the Leaside Wildcats Tuesday night in Ajax by drubbing them 3 to 0. It was December 19 that the Wildcats wrested a hard-fought overtime game 3-2 from the league-leading Lightning. Tonight on home ice the Lightning made no mistakes, scoring on two of five power play opportunities. The Wildcats failed to score on three such chances. The Wildcats outshot the Lightning 24 to 19. Katie Mowbray was in goal for Leaside, Danika Ranger for Durham West. Leaside 3-2 win slows down Durham West Lightning

Camp Can-Aqua ready to welcome kids from South Bayview

One of the most recent new advertisers in The South Bayview Bulldog is Camp Can-Aqua, an established summer camp for as many as 170 kids near Bancroft. As those who have visited Camp Can-Aqua will know, the camp is located on a beautiful private lake and surrounded by 160 acres of stunning Ontario landscape. Andrew Martin, Camp Director, was interested in an advertisement in The Bulldog because in previous years, many young campers at Can-Aqua came from Leaside and South Bayview. Andrew says Camp Can-Aqua is one of the greatest experiences a parent can give to a child.  It is a place where kids are able to choose their programs every day, a traditional camp to our core,  proud of the exceptional skill development that is offered.  The camp offers parent and kids visits to explore this summer home and offers opportunities for one, two or four weeks stays. Website and contacts: andrewmartin@canaqua.ca  (613) 339-2969

Dear Green P garage: Please, please let me go home

The Green P parking garage across the street from the Pleasant Blvd subway entrance was pumping out invalid parking tickets Tuesday afternoon. It caused a nice handful of drivers who couldn’t get out even after they had paid. “It does that sometimes” said a City worker.”We’re not sure why.” His arrival among the trapped motorists was hardly less welcome than the second coming. His advice? Push the help button that lurks among the many messages on the terminal at the exit gates (who knew?)  Even so, the presence of invalid tickets seemed a mystery to the person at the other end of the intercom. Green P: “What does it say now?” Driver: “Invalid ticket” Green P: “Try again. What does it say now?” “Driver: “Invalid ticket”  The gates were opened most quickly by a polite  “Please let me go home.”

Beck Taxi boss asks drivers not to participate in protest

The president of Beck Taxi is getting plaudits from civic officials, including local (Ward 22) rep Josh Matlow, for urging drivers not to participate in a strike to protest against Uber during the upcoming NBA All-Star Game in Toronto this weekend. Gail Beck-Souter (inset) wrote to drivers: “Some may want to convince you a protest that upsets this big event would help us get our message out. They are wrong. It would only hurt our valued customers and give Uber exactly what they want.”  Driver have a complaint however. The City has been feeble in dealing with international mammoth as it tries to take overs taxi functions without being regulated. Cabbies have complained they can’t compete with Uber, which they say is operating illegally while they’re forced to play by the rules.  Militant cabbies vow to paralyze City on NBA weekend
