Mayor Tory is promising to create a bylaw that will apply to “the entire ground transportation industry” — a definition he says would include Uber. The mayor spoke at City Hall Monday following a meeting with representatives from the taxi industry and Uber. “What we need is one bylaw that applies without question to everybody,” Tory said. “We cannot have companies in this city doing business outside of the law and we cannot have the Wild West but we also cannot have a city that in some way ignores the march of technology and time,” his worship told CP24.

Pan Am torch will change hands in Thorncliffe Park

The Pan Am Games torch will be passed between runners at R.V Burgess Park in Thorncliffe Park tomorrow morning (Monday, July 6, 2015). The exchange is expected to occur shortly before noon when runner Steven Gorgievski will come pounding into the park. He will pass the torch to Jaime Deane. The full ceremony surrounding the torch will go from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The celebration is a partnership between the Thorncliffe Park Women’s Committee, the Toronto Public Library, the City of Toronto and the TO2015 Pan Am/Para Pan Am Games. The celebrations will feature a market, art, music, performances and sports demonstrations. “Luminous Veil” transforms Bloor Viaduct into light show

The City has installed shimmering lights on the safety barrier of the Bloor Viaduct and inaugurated the display as part of the forthcoming PanAm Games celebrations. It is known as the “Luminous Veil” and it attracted spectators to both the bridge and to Bayview Avenue below. The project designer Dereck Revington said in a release from the City: “There’s nothing like it in the world.” The veil will be illuminated 365 days a year and will change with the seasons. Lorna Beddall will close her long-time store Mode Suzan at 1647 Bayview Ave. on August 31, 2015. Lorna has written to customers announcing sale. Effective immediately there is 40% off and in August there will be 50 percent off on all goods. She thanks her customers for their support and friendship over the years. There is a poignancy as Lorna says: “I will miss you all and this venture that was started nine and a half years ago. My Mother, Muriel Armour, will also miss you and the interactions she had with you all.” We’re sure Lorna would love to see her old friends at the shop soon.

Tim’s manager remanded in $200,000 coffee money skim

She worked at the Brant Street Tim Hortons near Upper Middle Rd. in Burlington since 2007 but now Mariel Abejero, 42, stands accused of skimming $200,000 from her employer in the 18 month period from January 2014 to May 2015. That’s more than $350 a day on average. Hamilton police were rather surprised at the sum of money which was discovered gone when Tim Horton’s did an audit of the store. “The value is quite high, not something we see every day,” said Sgt Ron Hansen. None of the cash has been found.
Men in big hats: Calgary celebrates Canada’s old west

Canada’s political leaders were decked out in cowboy hats yesterday for the Stampede Parade through downtown Calgary. Local dignitaries like Premier Notely and Mayor Naheed Nenshi rode horses in the parade. An estimated 200,000 people watched the parade which begins the Stampede. It lasts until July 12, 2015. Some 700 horses and 4,000 people participated variously in the parade, which was led by a hometown girl, two-time Olympic gold medalist and bobsledder Kaillie Humphries.
Police looking into death of woman in Toronto Beach

A woman said to be in her 50s has been found dead in a home at 65 Elmer Ave in the Beach. Police say the circumstances seem suspicious. Toronto paramedics were called to the house near Queen St. E. and Woodbine Ave. at 10:37 p.m. last night (Friday, July 3, 2015).
