Someone blew it as health worker gets Ebola

Health officials in the U.S. insist that someone made a mistake in order for the women caregiver to contract Ebola from her patient.  They call it a “breach in protocol” but its a mistake. Somehow the full protection gear this woman wore as she looked after the late Thomas Eric Duncan was compromised. The experts on the scene in Dallas at the Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital are not sure who let it happen or how it happened. It may have been the woman herself. Or not. It is possible to touch the outside of the protection gear when it is removed. It may have been contaminated. It is a disturbing additional mystery and concern for the authorities as they work to keep the virus isolated. Thomas Frieden, chief of the Centre for Disease Control, said his agency will investigate. “At some point there was a breach in protocol,” Frieden said. “That breach in protocol resulted in this infection.”

Fiat Chrysler stock debut in New York Monday

The stock of the new Fiat Chrysler Automobile launches on the New York market on Monday, a event that many wish could have been postponed. North American markets have nosedived in recent days. Canadian markets will be closed because of Thanksgiving. But investors will be able to punish FCA if they wish. Sergio Marchionne, right, is credited with pulling FCA together and given high marks by shareholders for his marketing savvy. The company’s hopes in the longer term are riding on the 2015 Chrsyler and Dodge minivan, shown above. It is a sleek-looking plug-in hydrid with a back window that defies recent covention in such design. Buyers may like it.

Photos of Sarah’s Food Drive at McDowell’s

The food donated through the generous efforts of South Bayview residents was sorted and bagged for delivery to the Daily Bread Food Bank Saturday (October 11, 2014). The target 70,000 lbs. — was super high at 10,000 lbs.more than last year. They’re close but still pushing to hit it. You can donate online until tomorrow by going to sarahsfooddrive.com and clicking on the ‘DONATE NOW’ link. Today’s event was sponsored as it is every year by Chad McDowell’s valu mart and Realtor Patrick Rocca both of whom made large contrubtions to the total of hampers. Pictures from the top, the gathered volunteer kids ready to to go to work filling bags at McDowell’s valu mart. Second from top, the work begins as kids each grab a unit of foodstuffs, assembly-line style, and put it in a bag held by Patrick Rocca. The bag already has a very heavy frozen turkey in it. Then Charlene Kalia, also volunteering and a buyer of many bags for the drive with her daughter Madelyn. With her colleagues and friends at Chesnut Park Charlene raised 84 hampers. Bottom, Byron Auburn of CTV Toronto interviews Claire Jordan sister of Sarah. The local drive started six years ago when Sarah and her mom heard news about the Daily Bread Food Bank seeking donations. It was at that moment Sarah decided she wanted to help. Now Sarah is surprised by the size and importance of the drive and its huge success.  The family is always on the lookout for new ways to involve the community. For a second year, Sarah and Claire have set up the school challenge, which includes 12 schools and approximately 6,000 students. “We go to assemblies at each of the schools and Sarah and I talk about our different roles. I talk about which foods are healthy and which are not,” Claire told the East York Mirror.  They also promote a business challenge to encourage them buy hampers or make donations. More to come.

Man dead, 3 injured as cement truck hits SUV

A horrifying fatal accident in which an SUV was rear-ended was witnessed by a man out campaigning for re-election this month. Jess Prothero says he heard a cement truck ram into the passenger vehicle as it slowed to turn left into a driveway of a retail farm store. It is a classic situation in which an expected turn (into a driveway) catches a driver (in the cement truck) unawares. A man in the SUV is dead, a woman who is six month pregnant is at St. Michael’s Hospital and a 6-year-old girl is at the Hospital for Sick Children with serious head injuries. A woman, 50, is also in a local hospital. It happened on Tottenham Road south of the Town of New Tecumseth. The Mississauga News quotes Prothero:  He said there were four people in the vehicle — two women, a man and a young girl. After the crash, Prothero said he and another bystander pulled the child from the car and the other man performed CPR on her. “We got her breathing again, but she’s not in good shape,” Prothero said. Just before EMS arrived at scene, he said they also pulled the man, who was unresponsive, from the vehicle. Police say the cement truck driver, a woman, received minor injuries.

Mode Suzan’s inspiring broken-window story

The broken window
Lorna Beddall of Mode Suzan has an inspiring follow up to the story on the broken front window at her Bayview Ave. shop. She tells The Bulldog: “On August 21, 2014 some young adults (ages 19 and 20) were roughhousing and one of them knocked the other into my front window and shattered it. It was an accident. They called the police and waited for them to arrive. The police called me and when I arrived, he told me the boys offered to pay for the damages as it was their fault. We exchanged our information, cleaned up the broken glass and went home. The next day one of the boys called me and asked about the cost to repair the window. My deductible is $1000 so each boy would pay $500. A few hours later he arrived at the store with $500 cash. Three days after that I went to the other boy’s home and picked up the remaining $500. These well-brought-up boys accepted the responsibility for the damage caused. How wonderful! I offered to give them a letter of recommendation for their honesty. This is a lovely good will story to be shared with the fine people of Leaside.” Thanks so much for sharing this Lorna. Previous post

Sneezing man says “I have Ebola” on crowded jet

A passenger flying from Philadelphia to the Dominican Republic was taken off a U.S. Aireways plane on arrival after sneezing and yelling: “I have Ebola!”. The remaining 255 passengers were made to stay on board for two hours. The unnamed passenger, who doesn’t have Ebola, was escorted off the plane by officials as he declared: “I ain’t from Africa”. The man had reportedly been sneezing and coughing, which are said to be early signs of having the deadly virus, throughout the four-hour journey to Punta Cana  Google

Election: Ari Goldkind factor sillier than silly

Did we call it the silly season? Today there is furious media and candidate discussion with straight faces of Ari Goldkind. It’s okay. You have not missed anything important. Mr. Goldkind is just a candidate for mayor, one of dozens who does not have a chance in a million of getting elected. He is however something for Doug Ford to talk about. Mr. Ford says Ari Goldkind is John Tory’s tag-team partner and that Tory, the frontrunner, is afraid to debate without him. Ford says he won’t appear at any debate where Goldkind appears. There’s more than a little bad blood between them after Goldkind accused Ford of being anti-semitic. In fairness, it is curious how Mr. Goldkind gets to be present at any debate. He is a criminal lawyer but it’s hard to see in practical terms why he has any more business at debates with big-time candidates who can win than say Wally Schwauss or Tibor Steinberger.
