Apple shows two “6” models — 4.7 and 5.5 inches

The new Apple iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus comes with screen sizes of 4.7 inches and 5.5 inches. They are rounder and thinner than previous models. They are said to have higher-resolution displays. Apple also revealed what appears to be a pay-by-phone function and has worked up deal with retailers. It’s  no brainer for the people who own stores, But honestly, they don’t care if you pay them with your phone. Think of how you wait at Starbucks for the phone tapping guy as opposed to the old-fashioned gent who just throws his coins on the desk.  It’s the instruction component. No one has to teach prehistoric cash people how to count out money. Well, what else. There’s now a wristwatch. Some say it will tell you that your phone is ringing. Would anyone pay for that service? And, Apple says it is opening up the watch to developers. Through a Starwood Hotels app, you can unlock your hotel door by waving the watch in front of the door. Through a BMW app you can remember where you left your care.  Sounds like a solution in search of a problem. Anyone who can’t remember where the car is should take a cab.  Just saying. USA Today

Cooked Apple on Twitter over Chinese voice over

There are two iphone 6 models, a Mandarin voice over on the Apple stream and a few people saying they miss Steve. About half an hour into the presentation, someone disposed of the “Chinese woman” who had somehow gotten onto the North American presentation. That’s it so far.

Franklin ship found on Arctic ocean floor

The thrilling discovery by sonar photography of a ship of the ill-fated Franklin expedition has been announced by Prime Minister Harper. Canadian explorers found the well-preserved wreck on the seabed where had drifted after being sunk by crushing ice. The tragic 1845 expedition to find the Northwest  Passage had been one of the most enduring historical mysteries of the country.  Sir John Franklin and his crew of 128 in the British ships HMS Erebus and HMS Terror all perished in the venture. They became part of native mythology and tales of cannibalism. It is not yet known which of the two ships has been found. “I am delighted to announce that this year’s Victoria Strait expedition has solved one of Canada’s greatest mysteries, with the discovery of one of the two ships belonging to the Franklin Expedition,” the Prime Minister said in a statement. “Finding the first vessel will no doubt provide the momentum – or wind in our sails – necessary to locate its sister ship and find out even more about what happened to the Franklin Expedition’s crew.”

David! Mr.Cronenberg! You’re live on CP24

Goodbye David
It may be penetrating the public mind that the Toronto International Film Festival is among the longest events on record to be scrutinized by local all-news television. TIFF is not treated by television like a two-week session of the mid-wives association. It’s puckish to ponder if the mid-wives would cloy as quickly as TIFF does under CP24’s “official station” attention.  This year events have conspired to make it worse. There’ s no other news so it must seem like a blessing at the Bell owned-broadcaster and TIFF benefactor (Bell Light Box) to dump it back to the red carpet of the instant.  But there are bright spots. This morning the usual ennui (as song writers say) was briefly lifted when the stars came out and just drove off without stopping. David Cronenberg signed a few autographs and then waved goodbye. Goodbye David. Love your movies now and then. So sorry we could not be there to say goodbye personally.  TIFF runs to the 14th.

Van driver in Georgia’s death “devastated”

The man charged with careless driving in the death of George Walsh was in court Monday. His lawyer, Chris Morris, said his client, Ranko Stupar, 50, is “devastated” by the girls’s death.  The man faces counts of careless driving and failure to stop at a red light.  He struck the child as he tried to right on a red light onto Millwood Rd. off of McRae Drive, a turn that would have taken him in the direction of Bayview Ave.  Stupar stayed at the scene of the accident. Georgia was the daughter of  Leaside residents John Walsh and his wife.  The concern about traffic is at fever pitch following the death.  It has inspired a large campaign of lawn signs which now can be seen through many parts of the city, an indication of the concern felt by parents everywhere. Stupar’s next appearance is on Oct. 2. when he is expected to receive copies of the Crown’s evidence supporting the charges. A charge of careless driving carries a maximum penalty of a $2,000 fine, six months in jail and a licence suspension of two years.

Toy drive riders on Bayview Avenue. Sunday

Harleys on Bayview

The Red, White and Blue Knights motorcycle riders roared up Bayview Ave during the noon hour Sunday (September 7, 2014) as part of their 35th Annual Toyride. Those who happened to be on Bayview at the time will remember the high-spirited and costumed riders from previous years. Organizers asked riders and their passengers to bring a new, unwrapped toy for the drive to the Nathan Phillips Square kickoff point. Their route took them Eastbound Queen Street to River St. and up Bayview Extension all the way to 401,  where they found their way back along the Don Valley Parkway to Phillips Square again. Great cause.
