Crown to tackle “sane but unable to relate morally” defense

The Crown began its cross-examination late Wednesday of witnesses in the trial of Alek Minassian, the Yonge St. van attack killer. It will attempt to challenge the highly particularized medical defense that Mr. Minassian, while not insane, suffers from a form of autism that renders him unable to understand the moral consequences of his actions thus rendering him not criminally responsible. The trial is before Justice Anne Molloy without a jury.

Newer SUVs and trucks with remote starters top the list of the most often stolen vehicles in Canada, the Insurance Bureau of Canada said Wednesday. The group that represents insurance companies across the country said theft from your own driveway using widely available electronic tools is on the rise across the country, as thieves respond to demand from high-end buyers overseas and street racers here at home. Police searching for British hiker and blogger Esther Dingley are “looking at other options” beyond an accident, her partner has told the BBC. Dingley, 37, last messaged her partner Dan Colegate via WhatsApp on 22 November, when she was on top of Pic de Sauvegarde on the France-Spain border. BBC

OLG reports a single $60 million winning ticket in Toronto

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. says a $60 million winning ticket for Tuesday’s Lotto Max jackpot was sold in Toronto. Another lucky Toronto buyer won $100,000 on Encore, as did a ticket buyer in Pickering. The draw’s second prize-winning ticket, worth $521,721.80, was sold in the Parry Sound-Nipissing district, OLG says. Tuesday’s winning numbers, according to olg.ca, were 1, 4, 9, 15, 18, 24, 31 and bonus 43. Encore was 8445323.

Spouses and friends spread virus in City says MOH de Villa

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Eileen de Villa says statistics reveal that 21 percent of the City’s current C-19 patients say they caught the infection from a spouse. As many as 35 percent said they think they caught the virus from someone outside their household, possibly a co-worker or friend.

761 cases reported Tuesday

One in five admitted they had been part of a group of less than ten during the time they caught the virus.  Dr. de Villa called the current wave of infections an urgent warning for citizens. C-19 cases in Toronto leaped from 643 on Monday to 761 Tuesday. Please be careful.
