Leaside Garden Society meetings for January and February

Leaside Garden Society will hold a Zoom meeting on Thursday, January 14 at which the speaker will be Suzanne Zachararczyk, an Etobicoke Master Gardener and member of the Applewood Garden Club. Her topic will be Wildlife in the City. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. Guests are welcome. Please join the Zoom meeting. For more information, visit the Garden Society site. Cars, trucks with remote starters are most likely to be stolen

Newer SUVs and trucks with remote starters top the list of the most often stolen vehicles in Canada, the Insurance Bureau of Canada said Wednesday. The group that represents insurance companies across the country said theft from your own driveway using widely available electronic tools is on the rise across the country, as thieves respond to demand from high-end buyers overseas and street racers here at home. Virtual ER at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre

Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre on Bayview Ave has announced a new virtual Emergency Department (or Emergency Room) as part of a six-month pilot also involving Unity Health and University Health Network. The Emergency Department has seen a decrease in patient visits during the pandemic likely due to patient fears of C-19. Release

Police think Esther Dingley may be victim of “non-accident”

Police searching for British hiker and blogger Esther Dingley are “looking at other options” beyond an accident, her partner has told the BBC. Dingley, 37, last messaged her partner Dan Colegate via WhatsApp on 22 November, when she was on top of Pic de Sauvegarde on the France-Spain border. BBC

OLG reports a single $60 million winning ticket in Toronto

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp. says a $60 million winning ticket for Tuesday’s Lotto Max jackpot was sold in Toronto. Another lucky Toronto buyer won $100,000 on Encore, as did a ticket buyer in Pickering. The draw’s second prize-winning ticket, worth $521,721.80, was sold in the Parry Sound-Nipissing district, OLG says. Tuesday’s winning numbers, according to olg.ca, were 1, 4, 9, 15, 18, 24, 31 and bonus 43. Encore was 8445323.

Spouses and friends spread virus in City says MOH de Villa

Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health Eileen de Villa says statistics reveal that 21 percent of the City’s current C-19 patients say they caught the infection from a spouse. As many as 35 percent said they think they caught the virus from someone outside their household, possibly a co-worker or friend.

761 cases reported Tuesday

One in five admitted they had been part of a group of less than ten during the time they caught the virus.  Dr. de Villa called the current wave of infections an urgent warning for citizens. C-19 cases in Toronto leaped from 643 on Monday to 761 Tuesday. Please be careful.

Woman dies in blaze at TCH building in Etobicoke Monday

A woman has died following a fire at Grigg’s Manor 1, 100 Cavell Ave. in Etobicoke. It is part of the Toronto Community Housing Seniors Housing. The woman was pulled from a unit amid heavy flames and thick smoke Monday morning.

Sidewalk clearing for Midtown 22 years after amalgamation

The residential and commercial sidewalks of Toronto and East York will now be cleared of snow on the same general basis as those in Etobicoke, North York and Scarborough. The decision was taken Thursday in a vote of 24 to 1 at City Council. The decision corrects an inequity hangover from amalgamation in 1998. Time-honoured neighbourhoods like Summerhill, Lawrence Park, Leaside Bennington and many others will see this simple municipal service for the first time ever.
