Rare eclipse of Sun seen in Asia, N. America

A thrilling eclipse of the Sun known as The Ring of Fire has rolled across Asia and parts of North America tonight. This video shows scenes in the Far East where the spectacle was at its best. Once approximately every 18 years the moon passes in front of the Sun, leaving a golden halo visible. Care must be taken to protect the eyes. In Canada, it’s said that British Columbia had the best view of what was only a partial view of the solar eclipse late Sunday well after bedtime in Eastern Canada.

Money exchange at 1538 will not re-open

Sources tell the South Bayview Bulldog that the NIMA money exchange at 1538 Bayview Ave will not be re-opening. It was previously reported back in December of last year that the owner, Hamid, had vowed to get the shop back in business. But now it appears that his dream of starting a full-up money exchange business has been dashed. The very bad break delivered by the fire last fall that ripped through Leaside Cleaners is the cause. The newly renovated NIMA shop next door was heavily damaged by smoke. It has not been open since. Hamid is a busy person. He is the successful operator of at least eight subway sandwich outlets.

Ward 27’s Wong-Tam pushing Expo bid

Nearly six years after a push for Expo 2015 fell apart, there’s a movement afoot for Toronto to consider bidding for the World’s Fair in 2025. “It’s very early in exploration. The conversations are very casual. It’s information-gathering,” said Councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam. Wong-Tam (Ward 27, Toronto Centre-Rosedale) said she is speaking to business leaders and trade unions, among others, to see if there is an appetite to mount a bid for the international exposition that showcases technology, architecture and culture from around the world. “So far the reaction has been very warm to enthusiastic,” she said. In 2006, city council, lead by then-mayor David Miller, was firmly behind Toronto making a bid. The federal government pledged to contribute $600 million to cover infrastructure, security and other costs.

Hedge removal improves lane visibility

The removal of the hedge on the property at 720 Millwood Rd. has created much better visibility for those exiting the heavily travelled lane east  of Bayview. Here we see the final bits being removed and (right) what it looked like before removal. The new fence also looks good. This is the residence which was occupied by Agnes Macphail when she moved to Toronto after after her defeat in the general election of 1940.

This Saturday morning on Bayview Ave.

This lovely Saturday morning sees a freshening up going on (above) at the Bayview Dental Clinic. The parking meters have also been freshened, it seems, because they’re taking coins again. Down at Millwood, some people are wondering about the renovation at Wild Wing. The sign on the door indicates the restaurant will re-open for business on Monday, May 21, 2012. That’s just two days hence. But there has been no discernible work done since the place was locked up some weeks ago. Who knows what that means.

Close call for pacemaker recipient on Bayview

This column recounts a rather harrowing incident recently on the Bayview Ave. Extension at Rosedale Valley Rd. The London Ontario reporter, Glen Stone, survived a blackout while at the wheel. His story is recounted here with a link to the rest of the column down below.  If you happened to be driving down the Bayview Ave. extension in Toronto at 3:15 p.m. last Thursday afternoon, you would have seen a strange sight. A car came in from Rosedale Valley Rd., then suddenly accelerated across the curb lane and the gravel shoulder, heading straight towards the Don Valley itself. It plowed through the chain link fence that runs beside Bayview and took out an entire section of metal fencing that scraped the car like a badly peeled potato. The car kept going down into a swampy depression in the valley and halfway up the steep embankment on the other side. It came to rest at a precarious angle on the slope beside the valley’s railway tracks. Another few feet and the battered vehicle would have been laying on the tracks, waiting to be hit by a train. Now, if you saw all that happen, you may have wondered, “What in the world is that driver thinking? The answer is he was not thinking at all. He was unconscious. I know. I was that driver. If you’ve never passed out while driving, the experience is . . . interesting  Conclusion.

Sandra Zhang off to China, Hong Kong

Customers will be interested to know that Homefront associate Sandra Zhang is off to mainland China and Hong Kong with her fiance Dennis Tsang for a one-month visit. Sandra and Dennis will first visit her parents in Beijing and then travel on to Hong Kong where Sandra will stand up with her friend Phoebe when she weds Tony. Sandra and Dennis are touched by both history and geography  as they embark. Dennis is Canadian-born and thus requires a visa to enter the mainland. As a foreign tourist, on the other hand, he can breeze right into Hong Kong. The reverse is true for Sandra. She needs only her Chinese passport to visit her mom and dad. But like most Chinese citizens Sandra had to obtain a highly sought-after visa to enter the special territory of Hong Kong.

Buffalo Bills captain visits Deer Park School

Deer Park Public School kids got a special thrill when Buffalo Bills Captain and starting Safety George Wilson visited them in April.  Mr. Wilson was part of the “NFL Canada -Take a Player to School Contest,” a sweepstakes that awards four national prize winners to take an NFL Player to school for the day and team merchandise for his/her family.  The program lets winners hang out with an  NFL player for the day, talking to the kids about topics spanning the importance of a healthy active lifestyle to goal setting and anti-bullying.  In this case, Deer Park’s Tikal Charles-Taylor, 12, seen in the Bills jersey left of Wilson, was given the chance to bring Wilson to school. The day started out at the Taylor residence, where Tikal’s mother June Charles made her signature “Breakfast of Champions” for Taylor and Wilson. The breakfast consisted of pancakes, bacon, sausage and fresh fruit. Tikal  and Wilson then took a chauffeured ride to the Deer Park School, where they greeted Tikal’s’s principal, classmates and teachers  — with Buffalo Bills news.
