7 Southlea Avenue meets the wrecker

It’s a little different to see a made-to-measure wooden fence around a demolition site but that’s what we have here as wreckers get ready to take down 7 Southlea Ave. It’s a good looking stone house but will no doubt pop back up with a lot more floor space. And thanks to the reader who mentioned this pending demoltion to The South Bayview Bulldog.

Sewer repair and pylons go together

People  around the area of  Balliol St., west of Mt. Pleasant Rd. have been putting up with sewer construction and the inevitable traffic pylons that block traffic. But an end to it is near, apparently, as the Star’s Fixer, Jack Lakey, has learned that work to connect a pipe from a catch basin to the main sewer line will be fixed within a few days. Then  the pylons will go.

Madrassah apologizes over anti-Semitic texts

A Toronto Islamic school under police investigation over its “anti-Semitic” curriculum has apologized to the Jewish community and promised to review its teaching materials. The East End Madrassah acknowledged in a press release that passages of its texts that refer to “crafty” and “treacherous Jews” and contrast Islam with “the Jews and the Nazis” were a mistake.National Post

Air Canada sued for $20 million after jet plunge

A mistake is a mistake but once again there appears to have been a cover up. Passengers are furious that they were told the plunge of the jetliner was caused by turbulence. As we posted earlier  the incident was caused by the co pilot, who thought he was about to be hit by another plane. He was wrong. Link to Canada.com above.

Toronto airport named worst in Canada

Toronto’s Pearson International Airport has been named the worst airport in Canada, according to a new survey from online travel agent FlightNetwork.com.  Toronto Sun. Our favorite complaint is the ongoing turf battle between Mississauga and Toronto over taxis. And there’s no train yet.

Pierre Trudeau’s last political act

Although he has been gone these many years, some people think that Pierre Trudeau has one last spectacular political act left to perform. Sure, that sounds dramatic but if his son, 42-year-old Justin Pierre James Trudeau, runs and is elected Liberal leader, it will be almost entirely because of the PET legend. Until recently, a Trudeau candidacy was not taken seriously. Most people put their money on Toronto Rosedale MP Bob Rae, not withstanding the left over liability of the ill-fated Ontario NDP government. But that was before the dynamic Thomas Mulcair became leader of the national NDP and raised the spectre of an NDP federal government That would leave the Liberals in a lengthening dark night as Canada’s irrelevant party. In her column in the Toronto Star, the astute and well-followed pundit Chantel Hebert calls Trudeau the younger the rock star of this Parliament.. Never mind  that some snidely say Justin has his father’s name and someone else’s brain. In a leadership vote where anyone who signs up as a Liberal supporter will have a say, he would be a formidable contender. Hebert goes on to say that a Trudeau-Rae tilt  “could pit the hearts of many Liberal loyalists against their reason.”  She says that more than a few Liberals would feel that losing on a Trudeau ticket would at least offer the party the grace of dying with dignity.

Moms win as Realtors offer goodies

It appears that a visit to Tremblett’s Valu-mart will be a must for many moms next Saturday (May12) as not one, but two, well-known real estate brokers offer Mother’s Day gifts at the supermarket. Patrick Rocca of Bosley RE has written to say that all moms will receive a free rose inside Trembletts all day Saturday compliments of  his practice. Earlier we learned that Realtor Charlene Kalia will offer free photogrpahs and other goodies on Saturday in the garden centre of Tremblett’s. Earlier post on that.

Toshi loves Sunday morning on Bayview

There are so many things to see on South Bayview on a sunny Sunday morning like today’s. We noted the temporary closure of Wild Wing for renovations, They opened the first time in January 2011 and say they will re-open May 21. Lovely flowers at Passion Fruit and crowds of gentry in the patios. Toshi (inset) likes it too and in the process becomes a sight himself. He is an eight-month old French bulldog. Toshi attracted a lot of admirers at Starbucks. We noticed however that he doesn’t always answer to his name.

Who really owns Mt Pleasant Cemetery?

See link to National Post at bottom of post: The Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries was created by an act of the provincial legislature more than 180 years ago as a public trust and “property of the citizens,” a status that apparently went unchanged in 12 other Ontario laws affecting the group, passed as recently as 1989. Today, though, the organization styles itself as an independent non-profit corporation, its books withheld from public scrutiny and its three main directors — all pillars of the Toronto business and philanthropic establishments — accountable to neither the public nor the legislature.  National Post

Potholes, ponds rank Bayview 10th worst

Outside Badali’s Fruit in 2009
Bayview Ave is a long road in Toronto so there’s lots of opportunity for potholes, ponds and rough pavement. The Canadian Auto Association has once again ranked roads in Ontario and Bayview Ave is said to be the 10th worst. Our nomination for the best reason why is this man-made pond that forms outside 1581 Bayview whenever it rains. It’s been there for years and during rush hour it leads to the soaking  of pedestrians. Here are the rankings.

2. Bunting Road (St. Catharines)
3. Burlington Street East (Hamilton)
