SERRA, the South Eglinton Ratepayers and Residents Association, has issued a “Call to Action” in advance Tuesday evening’s virtual meeting to discuss the 27-storey proposal for 733 Mt. Pleasant Rd.  The release provides detailed information on how to register and participate in the meeting. It begins at 7 p.m.

Protest Tuesday against Avenue speedway, slivery sidewalks

Residents will demonstrate Tuesday morning to urge slower speeds and wider sidewalks for the high-speed stretch of Avenue Road between St. Clair Ave. and Bloor Street. It sees some  30,000 vehicles a day and anyone who has walked the slivery sidewalks knows the meaning of fear. Five associations are allied as the Avenue Road Safety Coalition (ARSC).  They are urging the City to establish an immediate pilot project to widen sidewalks and to lower the speed limit to 40 kilometres per hour between Bloor and St. Clair. Ontario COVID-19 cases shoot to 700, 344 are in Toronto

There were 700 new cases of C-19 counted in the overnight period, a record number since the infection was first detected in Ontario. The cases reported Monday were found in 41,000 tests. Critics of the government often focus on a failure to achieve far higher test totals. The capacity of provincial facilities and staff is estimated somewhere near 80,000 tests a day. The previous high C-19 count was 640 cases found on April 24 with far fewer tests.

Distress of parents seen on local FB as Cody pupil is positive

The distress and in some cases anger of parents flowing from a positive C-19 result for a pupil at Cody Junior Public School has caused the admin of the Davisville Parents Facebook account to limit further comment. The long thread is seen here and reveals the confusion and upset of many during this difficult time.

Alert for patrons of Regulars bar on King as staff test postive

Toronto Public Health has issued a warning for patrons of Regulars, 668 King St. W., that three employees of the bar have tested positive for C-19. Anyone who visited Regulars between September 13 and September 22 is asked to self-quarantine for 14 days and arrange for testing.

A ticket holder in Quebec won Saturday night’s $8.4 million Lotto 649 jackpot. The draw’s guaranteed $1 million prize also went to a lottery player in Quebec. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on Sept. 30 will be approximately $5 million.

Under 40s continue to drive Ontario’s second wave surge

The Ministry of Health reports 491 new cases of COVID-1 for the 24-hour period ending at midnight. It is a number similar to those seen early in the pandemic last Spring. There are 137 new cases in Toronto, 131 in Peel, 58 in Ottawa and 58 in York Region. People under 40 accounted for 63 percent of Sunday’s cases.

King Street bars shut for pressuring staff to work while sick

Three King St West restaurants and bars have been closed by Toronto’s Medical Officer of Health after it was found that staff, some of whom had C-19, were pressured to work while ill. MOH Dr Eileen de Villa issued orders to shut until further notice the bars known as MARBL, 455 King, King Taps, 100 King and Casa Mezcal, 291 King. A release Saturday said the health department had found “a concerning link” indicating that staff working for more than one of the businesses had C-19. It said staff had also been found to be working while ill or been pressured to work while ill.

Yonge Warehouse Warningg

Toronto Public Health also issued an alert to staff and patrons of the Yonge Street Warehouse at 336 Yonge St. about potential exposure to COVID-19. The period for potential exposure is September 10 to September 17. In the last few days, tests have confirmed that seven people linked to this establishment are positive for COVID-19. Five are employees and two are patrons. TPH has followed up with all known close contacts. The close contacts have been asked to self-isolate for 14 days and to go for testing.

Canada does deal with AstraZeneca

As seen below in a tweet from Toronto epidemiologist Isaac Bogoch, Canada has done a vaccine deal with AstraZeneca. He notes that there are now deals between Canada and vaccine makers Sanofi, GlaxoSmithKline, Johnson & Johnson, Novavax, Pfizer and Moderna.

475 new cases in Ontario Saturday

The Ministry of Health reports another 435 new cases of C-19 in the province Saturday. The infection continues a resurgence in Toronto where there were 131 cases counted. Be careful everyone.



Triumphant Roberta, 11, to spend some time just being a kid

Talented Roberta Battaglia, 11, of Brampton, placed fourth in the top five contestants in the recent America’s Got Talent competition. It seems likely this accomplished and charming young girl has a career in show business. But then, as reported here, she has to spend some time just being a kid.
