A classy Bulldog named Thor has prevailed in a crowded field of canine candidates to be named Best in Show at the Purina-sponsored National Dog Show in Philadelphia. Thor first won the “non-sporting group” before taking on other top dogs like the English Sheepdog and the Husky. He also bested the Havanese from the Toy Group, Golden Retriever from the Sporting Group, the Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier from the Terrier Group and the elegant-looking Pharaoh Hound from the Hound Group during NBC’s broadcast of the annual show. Organic Garage says construction underway on Laird store

Organic Garage Ltd. has announced that work has begun on the construction of its grocery store in the development previously announced nearly three years ago at Laird Drive and Canvarco Rd. A release Thursday says Organic Garage “is pleased to announce that developer construction has commenced on its long-awaited Leaside location. Once completed, Organic Garage anticipates that it will take possession of the facility to complete the store’s fit-out phase by the middle of next year.” The store will be Organic Garage’s fifth location.

Why is cancer drug tamoxifen in short supply in Canada?

This CBC report suggests that the spotty supply of the cancer therapy drug tamoxifen has been caused by manufacturers leaving the market because of downward pressures on the price. It’s apparently about money. Canadian manufacturer, Apotex, told CBC it was fixing production issues. What that means is unclear. The British firm, AstraZeneca, says it expects to be able to meet all demand very soon.
Came home to heavy smoke, plunged inside to save things

CTV says it has been told that Nam Tu Huy Vu, 57, came home to a raging fire at his eighth floor apartment at 235 Gosford Blvd Nov. 15 and plunged into the unit to save belongings. The account comes from a friend of Vu’s who witnessed the victim disappear into the blackness. The body was found after the fire was extinguished on the apartment’s balcony. “He was with me and then he ran inside. I ran outside. That is pretty much it, said the friend. “He ran back inside to grab something and that was the last time I saw him. I don’t know what exactly he was doing inside because the smoke was too thick. By the time I ran to the door and looked back I couldn’t see anything.” Many displaced by high-rise fire have no renters insurance

No survivors reported in crash of Piper 6-seater at Kingston

Several people, seemingly all on board, are said to have died in the crash of a Piper PA-32 single-engine plane in a wooded area north of Kingston Wednesday. The aircraft is capable of carrying six. No survivors are reported. Police and other agencies are securing the scene. The Transportation Safety Board tells Canadian Press that it “will deploy a team of investigators tomorrow morning.”
New Bombardier cars yanked because of damaged brakes

The Toronto Transit Commission has yanked all Bombardier low-floor streetcars out of service on Queen St. because of widespread damaged brakes. “We’ve found damage to the brake system on seven streetcars on these routes,” the TTC said Wednesday afternoon. “This is in an abundance of caution.” Routes 501, 501L and 508 have been replaced with buses, the TTC said. The TTC said they suspect damaged tracks may have made contact with the streetcars’ brake systems. For reasons that are unclear, there are still streetcars running west of Roncesvalles Avenue via The Queensway and Lake Shore Boulevard.

A small number of visibly furious elementary school teachers assailed Education Minister Stephen Lecce Wednesday as he left Ogden Junior Public School on Phoebe St. near Spadina Ave in Chinatown. He had attended a meeting about bullying. The teachers put on quite a spectacle although it is difficult to hear just what they are saying.
$21.5 million home on Roxborough Dr labours to find buyer

National Post writer Joseph Brean reports on the challenges of selling Integral House, a private residence at 194 Roxborough Drive. Its name comes from the mathematical function of the curves of its exterior glass walls. It is for sale for $21.5 million, some $10.5 million less than it cost to build earlier this century.
