Toronto Legacy Aces a wistful bid to break Leafs lock on TO

Big dreams and high hopes have driven a consortium of monied and altruistic hockey fans to again float an idea for a second NHL team in the GTA. It seems like a long shot somehow given the absolute lock that the Maple Leafs have been able to place on competition from Hamilton. Fans in The Hammer would kill to see an NHL club. This time the Toronto promoters are calling their dream team the Toronto Legacy Aces. Organizers say they would fund a woman’s professional hockey team here as well.

Surprise! Public school teachers vote 98% in favour of strike

Public elementary teachers and education workers in Ontario have voted 98 percent in favour of a strike, the union representing them said Friday, calling the result an overwhelming mandate for job action if they deem it necessary. The Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario said talks with the province at the central bargaining table have not progressed in any meaningful way. Union president Sam Hammond said his members are concerned about class size, class structure, violence in classrooms, and the preservation of the current full-day kindergarten model. Almost every issue has become a sticking point in the negotiations, he said — Canadian Press

City urges “another look” as Standard Time dark descends

The darkness of the November time-change is upon Toronto again with the switch to Eastern Standard Time at 2 a.m. on Sunday, November 3. There are will be fewer daylight hours and reduced visibility everywhere. It’s a time when pedestrian collisions increase by more than 30 percent. To draw attention to the increased risks facing pedestrians and cyclists, the City of Toronto is launching a public education campaign that promotes road safety as we enter a season with reduced daylight hours. It features a series of painted faces with the eyes focused on either a pedestrian, a cyclist or a vehicle. Using the slogan “Take another look,” the campaign intends to remind Torontonians, especially drivers, to be aware of each other as they share the City’s roads. Similar advertising efforts around the daylight saving time change in New York City led to an overall reduction in fatalities. Also City News
