Crowds jam platform waiting for trains that aren’t coming
The TTC says a private contractor working at street level has drilled through a concrete subway tunnel, causing damage and extensive delays along Line 1 during the height of rush hour. Subway service was suspended both ways between Lawrence and St Clair stations about 2:30 p.m. Officials called the problem an infiltration of the tunnel. The project causing the intrusion is not named. At around 5 p.m., the TTC said they do not expect the closure to clear in time for the evening rush hour. Around 90 shuttle buses are running between York Mills and St. Clair stations, but customers are being advised to use alternate routes where possible. CP24 said a “reverse GO protocol” is also in effect because of the problem, meaning that customers can ride GO Transit between any two Toronto GO stations on a TTC fare.
Torontonians are tweeting images of chaos as crowds line the streets waiting to board one of the 90 shuttle busses TTC says they have deployed.
TTC media relations reports that “a private contractor working at street level has reported drilling through the concrete #TTC subway tunnel liner mid-way between Lawrence and Eglinton Stns. Service is suspended while we investigate the extent of the damage. 50+ shuttle buses will run from St. Clair to Lawrence. Update coming from on site shortly where engineers are determining if there are any structal impacts. We can then make decisions on service resumption. We have 90 buses ordered to deal with afternoon rush hour. Reverse GO protocol is in effect. Ride GO north from Union Station on a TTC fare.
“…As of 545pm, we have crews ready to plug and grout the hole. Service back in approx 30 mins with reduced speed of 15km/h through the area northbound. Southbound should be unaffected. We will close the line at 10pm for emerg repairs. Sorry, Raps fans. But safety first.”

ITV suggests that Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, is on the outs with his brother, Prince William, over a decision to go to war with UK tabloids. Then, the big banks keep getting duped by hackers but it’s the customers who are hurt. Below that, fun with bobbleheads as City News wonders about the Raptors re-build. Finally, the king of Siam has two wives and (surprise) it’s causing him grief.
Traffic was blocked on Yonge St. for a period Tuesday morning when a woman was reported to have been hit by a large dump truck exiting out of her parked car. Reports indicate she was breathing and it’s believed she is now recovering in hospital. The accident is a critical reminder for pedestrians and motorists as the winter season approaches and early evening darkness descends on the City. Global
The Liberal Party will form a strong minority government. The party of Justin Trudeau won a second term but it will need the support of at least one other party in order to pass any legislation while it is in office. Public opinion surveys that telegraphed a CPC minority government appear to have been based on the popular sentiment in total, which the Conservatives won. (chart below).
Unassailable with NDP support
The outcome may well forecast a period of NDP-oriented legislation since the Trudeau government will be unassailable with New Democratic support. This is a good CBC analysis.
Toronto Liberal Red
Toronto was a Liberal bastion as the Trudeau party won every seat. Don Valley West MP Rob Oliphant was re-elected handily with more than 55 percent of the popular vote, although Conservative Yvonne Richardson had the support of more than 33 percent of voters. Mr. Oliphant handed out butter tarts from COBs during the vote count and no doubt found the evening exceedingly sweet
Sweet enough as politics go
Winner in Don Valley West with associates

The opening of Eataly, the celebrated Italian sit down or walk about eating place, is now set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, according to the firm. The new Eataly is at the Manulife Centre on Bloor St. Reports suggest the first Toronto Eataly will rival international locations of the restaurant. Executive president Andrea Guerra has told the Financial Post that he sees another Eataly in Toronto in the coming months as part of other Canadian expansion. “First of all, Toronto probably, being the largest city, could host a second Eataly,” said Guerra. “And then, between Montreal and Vancouver, there could be another Eataly.”
The origins of Greektown on the Danforth will be discussed on a walk scheduled for next Saturday and Sunday, October 26 and 27. The area has had a long and varied history dating from 1799 when American contractor Asa Danforth Jr., started work on Danforth’s Road as a proposed hundred-mile route to the Trent River. That road was completed in 1801, but soon fell into disrepair and was largely replaced by the 1817 Kingston Road stagecoach. Danforth Avenue was built by the Don and Danforth Plank Road Company in 1851 to connect Danforth Road to Broadview Avenue.
A Leslieville woman has posted her concerns about the alleged free distribution of a nicotine vaping pencil to a 20-year-old in Leslieville who has never smoked tobacco. The post has drawn considerable response including several comparisons to the technique of recruiting addicts. “The first one is free.” FB
