How we’ve grown on Manor, other South Bayview highlights

A bare four months this summer is all that was needed to tear down the little story-and-a-half home on the northeast corner of Manor Rd. and Cleveland St. Now, a very large new home has shot up. It looks big enough for three families. At upper right, Liz Topp snapped this high-spirited scene as Jason Binnginton, star goalie of the St. Louis Blues, brought the Stanley Cup to his mom’s Leaside home. He is surrounded by excited neighborhood kids, some of whom may be related to him. Below that, MP Rob Oliphant is seen with Christine Gow, Ana Serrano, Nataly De Monte and Alannah O’Neill as he announced federal investment in women-led business. Then, large billboard-sized place names are popular. Think City Hall. This one graces a home on Moore Park. Hey Terry. Lower left, the Leaside Wildcats Midgets AA ladies have come home with silver from the Stoney Creek Midget Showcase tournament. Finally, speaking of ladies, it will be the gentlemen serving the women at St. Cuthbert’s Women’s Dinner on October 18. Guys, get your tickets now. And put on your white gloves like a good waiter.

Colle, Matlow and Robinson hold impromptu safety scrum

Councillors Colle, Matlow and Robinson will hold a street-corner news conference outside the Aroma Espresso Bar at Yonge St. and Eglinton Ave. Wednesday at 6 p.m. to discuss construction and road safety in Midtown. It follows the death of a woman pedestrian on Tuesday. She was hit by a cement truck at the corner of Yonge and Erskine Ave. Below is the release issued late Wednesday.

Just what happened?

Maybe it should be clear, based on the police release, but the circumstances of the women’s death seem sketchy. She was crossing from north to south on Yonge at Erskine and was hit by a northbound truck turning right. It’s unknown whether both the driver and woman failed to see each other or whether the driver hit the woman after she had passed from his line of sight on the south side. More needs to be known.

Election call, vaping horror, off-leash parks and to save a life

The Prime Minister is expected to visit the Governor General Wednesday and ask her to call a general election for October. Then, the horrors of vaping continue to mount. Below that, the City is seeking feedback about off-leash parks. We suspect there will be plenty. Lastly in this turn of the Video Wheel, the TTC is asking commuters to have a kind word for people they see in the subway who appear to be distressed. It is a plan to prevent suicides. Maybe. But modern subways in places like Korea and China have automatic gates to stop both suicides and accidental falls.

650 Parliament fire cause an electrical “catastrophic failure”

The official cause of the fire at 650 Parliament St. some 13 months ago has finally been released. It seems to carry no particular surprises, describing the nature of the power loss and fire as “catastrophic failure” of the building’s electrical system following an explosion in the electrical room. Earlier conclusions said similar things. There is no published mention of the alleged decades of neglect of the electrical system. Repairs continue with more than $20-million of an estimated $25- $30-million having been spent. Lawyers for the residents, who remain out of their homes, have filed a class-action lawsuit against building management, Wellesley-Parliament Square (WPSQ), to get compensation for expenses and other losses.
