The late Tom Irwin speaks of meeting LSHOF inductee and national football legend Joe Krol when he was a boy. It’s an informative and touching insight into Krol’s decent character. A person has died in a house fire on Roncesvalles Ave between Marion St. and Pearson Ave. Tuesday night. The Toronto fire service responded about 10.30 to the call. It appears that the victim was trapped upstairs by the fire. The fire marshal will investigate.
The Prince Edward Island Conservative Party will form a minority government in the Confederation province after taking 12 seats in the 26 seat Legislature. Dennis King is Premier-elect. The Green Party will form the Opposition with nine seats. The Liberals, which had formed the government until Tuesday, won five seats. The Greens had led in opinion polls since August credited largely to their dynamic leader Peter Bevin-Baker, a Scottish born dentist.

The two best known stock indexes in Canada and the U.S. closed at record highs on Tuesday, as the price of oil pushes higher and U.S. companies posted strong profits. The S&P/TSX Composite Index of the largest companies on the Toronto Stock Exchange closed up 93 points to 16,671. That beats the previous all-time high the index hit last week, when it headed into the long weekend at 16,612. CBC
Game 7 of the Leafs-Bruins series is likely to pretty much clear the streets Tuesday night as fans and even non-fans gather around the television. For the second straight year, the two teams have taken a series to the limit. The winner of this game (CBCSports.ca, 7 p.m. ET) will head to the Eastern Conference semifinals against the Columbus Blue Jackets. The Bruins earned the right to play Game 7 at home by finishing seven points up on the Maple Leafs in the Atlantic Division, but home-ice advantage hasn’t meant much so far in the series. No team has won two in a row over the first six games; Boston would need to break that streak to advance.
Four Grade Seven girls at Hodgson Middle School are Canadian champions in the brainy international competition known as Kids’ Lit Quiz. For their hard work, intelligence and calm under fire, Gillian, Julia, Lila and Leah are heading to Singapore this July to compete for the Kids’ Lit world championship. Team Canada (previously the Hodgson Hawks) will compete against national teams from ten other English-speaking countries. The girls gained the right to compete in Singapore by winning the national championship held at McMaster University in Hamilton in January. Their victory was solid as they finished 9 points ahead of second place Tecumseh Elementary School from Vancouver. John T. Tuck Public School of Burlington finished third. Judges noted it was the first time in eight years that a public school has won national honours. The team will be holding an online auction from May 23 to June 2 to raise funds for the girls’ airfare to Singapore and to donate to Kids’ Lit Canada. Authors and local businesses have generously donated more than 100 items for the auction.
Kids Lit Quiz is the creation of Wayne Mills, a former professor at the University of Auckland. It’s first year was 1991 and since then it has seen thousands of students 10 to 13 from around the globe participate. It has been nicknamed with remarkable accuracy the Sport of Reading. Kids stand by their buzzers in teams of four to answer questions about the written works, life, times and maybe even the idiosyncracies of English language authors past and present. Kids’ Lit Quiz has spread to eleven countries where English is a universal, and usually, the first language. They are Australia, Hong Kong, Indonesia, New Zealand, Nigeria, Singapore, South Africa, Thailand, United Kingdom, Canada and the US. Now Gillian, Julia, Lila and Leah are at work with Hodgson teachers Ms Diane Stewart and Mr. Evan Tarleton, determined to win in Singapore.
Toronto DJ and impressionist Lucas Meyer will voice the character of Justin Trudeau on The Simpsons. Mr. Meyers is well known in radio and media circles for his amusing imitations, most of them uncannily like the real subject. The Simpsons episode will be written by Emmy-award winning writer and Exeter, ON, native Tim Long. It deals with Simpson off-spring Lisa being mistakenly granted asylum in Canada during a family outing to Niagara Falls. The Sun says Tuesday that Long believes “there may be mention of a current scandal.” That suggests the SNC-Lavalin controversy may get some airtime. Meyer’s impressions were well-known among fellow journalists in Calgary, where he worked for local radio station, 660 News. He is now employed at Newstalk 1010.
A thread of 22 comments on Facebook now deleted discussed the story and pictures posted by a North Leaside resident about the young man seen here. He jumped over a fence and “made himself comfortable” in the backyard. “My husband went out and asked him to leave. He went without much protest, straight toward the house across the street. When he saw me taking pictures he turned westbound on Donlea. I filed a police report.” The lady of the house continued: “He was rummaging through our things on our deck. I was too scared at that moment to ask about his well-being, as he was trying to steal from us. He is probably sick and needs help, but in those few minutes I could only think about the safety of my children.” Some of those posting said they think he has been seen panhandling near Leslie St. and Highway 401.

Three of the four children of Danish billionaire Anders Holch Povlsen died in the Sri Lanka bombing attack, according to local media reports. The family was visiting the country over the Easter holiday. The names of the children have not been released at this time. Holch Povlsen is one of Denmark’s richest men, being the owner of the clothing chain Bestseller and the biggest single shareholder in online clothing retailer ASOS. He is also the largest private landowner in the U.K., according to media stories.
