Doug Ford told he has to be carbon copy of Kathleen Wynn

Fun with carbon as Doug Ford says the PC government will meet the Paris agreement target of reducing emissions by 30 percent in ten years. But no, say the Liberals. Tha wonderful Kathleen Wynne agreed to cut carbon by 40 percent and Ontario “can’t go backwards.”  Then, New Brunswick is bringing back chocolate milk to school lunches six months after it was banned. Below that, they’re achin’ for bacon at the Ohio State meat sciences faculty where students can now get tasty swine slices from a vending machine. Last, and maybe deservedly so, YouTube Canada’s most watched videos from 2018.

Guys Night Out evening will deliver a toy to 4,500 children

The 15th Annual Leaside Guys Night Out was a happy, crowded and successful fundraiser once again Thursday. As we know, the December outpouring of selfless goodwill and generosity is intended to raise money to buy a gift for every single one of some 4,500 school kids in Thorncliffe and Flemingdon Park. And it looks like it was mission-accomplished once again, according to those present. But now the hard work begins. The counting of proceeds (donations are still welcome) and the work of buying and delivering these toys starts today. Guys Night Out is an event jammed with auctions, raffles, contests and games. It is organized by Leaside Pub principal Jeff Hohner and Daryn Everett, Micheal Zivot, Ed Wong, Lisa Lefebvre and David Skelly. One much sought-after auction prize is a steak and cigars dinner for eight offered by Andy Elder (Grilltime) and Trae Zammit (Smokin’ Cigar). This year it was taken by Don Bates.  The shots above show Guys Night loyalists and auction action underway. Below is the back end of this event as seen in 2017. Jeff Hohner, Mike Zivot and Daryn Everett get busy delivering the toys.

Pumpkin sends a note, New Year’s dishes and Atoms on top

From Davisville to West Don Trail, time for a Friday summary and look ahead. Upper left is Pumpkin as she writes a note to the kids in Room 115 at Davisville Public School. Guess how she got her name. Upper right is a winged sweetie tweeted by Russell Sutherland in reply to @rudydotca. It was taken on the West Don Trail. Thank you to reader John Burns who writes to say this is a female northern cardinal. Below that is some “golden party-ware”  on offer from PrepFete, the dynamic and imaginative party theme business of Katie Hood and Naomi Choi, both of Leaside. These two seem to have invented the concept of the party kit. Take a look . Lower left, Councillor Fletcher tweeted this view of the Christmas tree lighting at East York Civic Centre on Coxwell Ave. At lower right, the Leaside Wildcats Atom A team took home gold from the Whitby Tournament of Heroes. Well done team. Finally, across the bottom, events you should consider this weekend.

Leafs fight back from 4-1 hole but lose it 5-4 in overtime

Daryl Larkin scored at 2:48 of overtime as the Detroit Red Wings beat the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 Thursday despite blowing a three-goal lead in the third period. Notable was the effective benching of Mr. Nylander (what!) to make the Matthews line more effective. Watch video to see that it worked quite well. Missed stone wall Anderson too.

Premiers packing issues as they meet Trudeau in Montreal

The premiers begin meeting with Mr. Trudeau and ministers in Montreal Thursday evening and the outlook is called tense. Many premiers think Canada is lost in the fog on the issues which it owns outright — like petroleum. Too few pipelines, no self-sufficiency and very limited exports. The informative video at left finds City Cynthia Mulligan on the same flight as Mr. Ford by happenstance and permits an interesting interview.
