The Blue Jays introduced Charlie Montoyo Monday. Have a look. Then, that steadfast opponent of sports gambling Gary Bettman has done a 180 by signing a deal with MGM Resorts to launch NHL wagering. He seems to have had little choice after the US Supreme Court legalized state gambling on individual events last May. Then, the Premier is all about being Open For Business. He’s having signs made to hang up on the highways. And finally, the Transportation Safety Board is warning that too many railway workers, and others, are cheating on necessary sleep to do their demanding jobs.
Hockey song, migrant music and Calgary twins light of foot
by •
Call this the music edition of Faces in the news. At left is the son of Stompin Tom Connors, enormously proud of course as his dad’s joyful salute to hockey is ushered into the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame at Scotiabank Arena. Connors Jr. was an infant when The Good Old Hockey Game was written. Now it is an anthem to our way of life. At centre, joyous music of another kind as a band of migrant workers sings in the fields of southern Australia after they have finished a day’s work. They are from the tiny democratic island land of Vanuatu formerly New Hebrides. If you feel the need to write angry comments about race, poverty and/or migrants, save it for the YouTube comments, okay? At right, is (either) Jennifer or Alexandra Gibson They’re Calgary identical twins dancing with the Alberta Ballet Company and preparing for a holiday presentation of Sleeping Beauty. Here’s to you ladies.

New Starbucks on Overlea and Team Epping Grand Slam
by •
A new Starbucks has opened at 62 Overlea Blvd. and Beth Nealson Drive. It is a light and airy place with windows on three sides. The feeling is more like a bar than a Starbucks. We call the welcome appearance of this place part of the Costco effect. At right, Leaside’s John Epping and his stalwart crew have captured the Canadian Beef Masters men’s title with a 7-4 victory over Calgary’s Kevin Koe in Truro, NS. It is Epping’s fourth championship in the Pinty’s Grand Slam of Curling series and completes a career Grand Slam for the skip having captured all four majors. At centre left, boys and girls soccer teams from Maurice Cody Public School won their classes at the Toronto District Elementary School Athletic Association (TDESAA). Nice going guys. At centre, for $624,900 you can move straight in at 874 Cosburn. That’s just east of Woodbine Ave. At the bottom, three always enjoyable events at local churches coming up next Saturday, November 3.

The Maple Leafs beat the Winnipeg Jets 3-2 at home Saturday in a thrilling come-from-behind performance. But with the win, the Leafs also lost centre Auston Matthews to a shoulder injury — putting a cloud of uncertainty over what was an exhilarating third period resurgence with goals scored 26 seconds apart by Jake Gardiner and Kasperi Kapanen to secure Toronto’s second-straight win in a home-and-home. Saturday morning (until 1 p.m.) saw the annual Manor Road United Church Rummage Sale at 240 Manor. This event has both fixed prices and items sold for whatever the buyer wishes. One transaction saw four excellent large coconut cookies go for three dollars. Cheap at twice the price. Team Manor veteran Susan was selling excellent choice varieties of cheese for charity as usual. Business was brisk shortly after the 10 a.m. opening.
