Steady rain pounds down on South Bayview at midmorning

The Weather Network calls for “scattered thundershowers” Wednesday. A surprising onslaught of rain hit South Bayview for more than an hour this morning.

Widespread flooding, damage fromTuesday night swamping

Heavy rain Tuesday night threatened to drown two men in an apartment elevator near Jane and St.Clair West. The deluge pummeled the City, flooding roads, sending water through the closed roof of the Rogers Centre and damaging offices and homes. Toronto Police Operations on Twitter reported the two were trapped in an elevator filled with water that was approximately six-feet high. A tenant said the men had been headed down to the parking garage to check on their vehicles. Northeast portions of the north-south subway are closed Wednesday because of flooded track. On Twitter, citizens posted pictures and video of their experiences. The Breakfast Television video below has some startling shots. Check the heavy iron sewer covers thrown into the air by spouting rainwater.

Condo owners find “tenant” is really an Airbnb flip artist

This is a story about a couple who leased their investment condominium to a man who they never met. In due course they learned that whoever he (or she) was, their condo was being used like a hotel room by Airbnb one-nighters.  Many will be sympathetic but others will wonder what they were thinking. Home Depot shuts Harvey’s, Subway to reclaim sales space

Multi-national Home Depot has made a decision to close all restaurants in its stores this fall. As reported earlier, the Harvey’s outlet in the Home Depot at 101 Wicksteed will close at the end of September. The Subway sandwich concession at the Home Depot at 7 Curity Ave. is on similar notice. Staff at Home Depot are quite apologetic about the changes and say that head office in the US has directed that such space be used to display and sell its inventory.

Populist buck a beer the PC version of saloon free lunch

Ontario Premier Doug Ford is expected to roll out the provincial government’s buck a beer plan when he visits a brewery early today in Picton. The slogan is reminiscent of old-fashioned saloons offering “free lunch” and the ultimate truth that there is none. Buck a beer was one of Ford’s promises during the election campaign. He has also vowed to expand the sale of beer and wine to corner and box stores in Ontario. It appears a 25 cent reduction in the price of a  beer will be achieved by lowering the tax. The reduction won’t apply to draft beer, sources report, so a visit to the pub in a search for free lunch  will still cost the same.

New A&W to open in large space at East York Town Centre

Upper left, a new A&W restaurant will open in a recently built storefront at the East York Town Centre. The Mama, Papa, Teen and maybe In-law Burger place will go next to Once Upon A Child. It’s easily seen from Overlea Blvd. The space appears to be as big as 4,000 sq feet. It is no doubt the kind of bonus that EYTC owners Morguard Property were hoping to get from the new Costco across the street. Upper right are Leaside Volleyball ladies Giulia and Tatum bringing home U14 gold from the London Ontario Summer Games. Nice going Giulia and Tatum. Middle right is a picture tweeted by Mary Fragedakis of the new bike sharing station on Gamble Ave. This new cycle rental gambit by Toronto seems to have some takers. Lower right, the enterprising members of the Leaside Lawn Bowling Club are working hard to keep the place from growing old. It’s working too. Finally at left, appetizing  Ontario Heirloom Tomato and Peach Bruschetta from Paul Hickey’s Today’s Menu on Millwood Rd. at Rumsey Rd.

Scary video sparks debate on what went wrong on Hwy 401

Dashcam video from a tow truck waiting to remove a pickup truck shows a horrifying collision as a speeding car slams into the small truck. It appears from the narration that a father, mother and son from the truck escaped serious injury. Quite amazing. The video is presented as a lesson on why drivers should slow down at an accident scene. That makes sense as far as it goes. But many of those commenting on YouTube are focussed on the position of the pickup. It is angled out into the road in a way that is dangerous by definition. The report doesn’t say if the vehicle is there because it is immobilized. Video here.

Rain received variously, some trees down but Archie liked it

Monday’s rain was variously received. Some rain haters on Twitter were told by Joanna@jesna3 to send the rain to her parched Poland. The Rogers Cup was forced into a rain delay but it does not seem serious. Above we see a tree down on Molson St. thanks to Yonge and Roxborough News posted a picture of Archie loving it. Dan Landry@canuckdaneh tweeted the calm before the storm flora at right.
