Come From Away cast serenade NL granddad, 94, other fun

Is there enough depressing news? No kidding. Some of it isn’t even real. But the video wheel gets very real starting with a delightful visit to the cast of Come From Away singing Happy Birthday to a Newfoundland granddad  He is 94 and he loved it. Then, did you hear that Mexico stunned the world, and itself, by beating Germany 1-0 in World Cup play? They say the reverberations from the joy in Mexico City caused seismometers to react. Below that a man of so so judgment lets a python snake around his neck and has to be rescued by his friends. That’s what we call a happy ending. And finally, you must enjoy the giddy reaction of people in the streets of Liverpool as Paul McCartney shows up unexpectedly to join James Corden in a session of Carpool Karaoke. We’re smiling.

Leaside’s Lucca Agate, 15, burns up track at OFSSA event

A Leaside girl, 15-year-old Lucca Agate, has just burned up the track at the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Associations (OFSAA) track and field event in Toronto. Lucca, who has been running for less than 18 months, took the 100m, 200m, 400m and the 4×100 junior girls relay. She is clearly a competitor to be watched with dreams of Canadian Olympic glory in mind. Her mom is Peggy Tilbenny.

Chris Luka snapped the shot at left of the 88-year-old sidewalk on Parkhurst Ave. as the City prepares to replace pavement on the street. It is among the oldest stamps he has seen (us too) and says “Huckle Bros. 1930.” Many are commenting Sunday on this interesting bit of local lore. At the right is a just-received poster from the South Leaside Monday Group advertising its event this coming Wednesday. Please check the South Bayview Bulldog Bulletin Board for coming local events

Finally, the 12th annual Bayview Cup Golf Tourney has been won (again) by Leaside in a low-key battle last Friday against players from Davisville Village. As best we can tell from the website, the laurels for this tepidly contested event count up to Leaside eight and Davisville four. You can catch the true flavour of the Bayview Cup by knowing that it adjourns to the Leaside Pub. Good work all.

Toronto and the GTA remain under a heat warning today ahead of sweltering temperatures that could make it feel close to 40 with the humidex.

HOT SUNDAY, HOT MONDAY

The temperature at 6 a.m. was already 17 C and Environment Canada says that the mercury will rise to 32 C by later this afternoon. With the humidex added on, the weather agency says that the temperature could feel closer to 40 at times. Same thing Monday.

Girlfriend sabatoged man’s education, says Ontario court

Ontario Superior Court has heard an incredible story of betrayal by a young woman who sabotaged her boyfriend’s career opportunity apparently because she feared he would leave her to study in the US.  Eric Abramovitz was an aspiring clarinetist who had applied to study with Yehuda Gilad, an internationally renowned clarinet teacher. The court this week condemned the  “despicable conduct” of his girlfriend, Jennifer Lee, who, evidence revealed, entered Abramovitz’s laptop and concocted a rejection of Gilad’s offer to instruct the young man. The court ordered Lee to pay $350,000 in damages. Court records show Lee and Abramovitz were students at the Schulich School of Music at Montreal’s McGill University in 2013 when they began an intimate relationship, and he all but moved in to her apartment. She had full access to his laptop, the records show.

GIRLFRIEND DELETED ACCEPTANCE EMAIL

A multiple award-winning clarinetist, Abramovitz applied in December 2013 to study at the prestigious Coburn Conservatory of Music in Los Angeles under Gilad. Although Gilad only accepts two clarinet students a year, Abramovitz made the cut after a rigorous screening and auditioning process, court records show. In March 2014, the school emailed Abramovitz to say he had been accepted, an offer that carried with it a full two-year scholarship and stipend. Except he never saw the email, court records show. Lee intercepted and deleted the acceptance and, pretending to be him, declined the offer because he would be “elsewhere,” according to the court. She then sent her boyfriend a phony message from a fictitious email address, giladyehuda09@gmail.com, telling Abramovitz he had been turned down by Coburn.

LOST TWO YEARS

Abramovitz was later accepted at the school and over time, began to understand that he had been duped.  With the help of a friend he conducted amateur forensic investigation of his computer and discovered Ms. Lee’s deception. He sued his former girlfriend in August 2016. In a sworn affidavit filed with the court, Gilad denounced what had happened to Abramovitz, who now lives in Nashville but will join the Toronto Symphony Orchestra later this year. Lee, who lives in Toronto, never responded to the lawsuit or defended herself, leading the court to find her liable by default. Marshall Reinhart, Abramovitz’s lawyer, said in an interview with Canadian Press that they now faced the task of collecting on the judgment. Doug Ford vows his first act will be to end cap-and-trade

Ontario premier-designate Doug Ford has said again his first act in the Legislature will be to scrap the cap-and-trade program. The legislation is little understood by taxpayers who nonetheless feel the increased cost of goods and services of a tax nominally intended to help improve the environment. If it does what it is reputed to do, cap-and-trade lowers greenhouse gas emissions by setting limits and letting companies that exceed them purchase so-called allowances from other emitters whose emissions fall below the cap. Maybe that creates a net benefit. Some feel it does but many are befuddled by it.

YORK CONTRACT FACULTY BACK TO WORK

Contract faculty at York University have voted a second time to return to work and will do so Monday, according to York University. The employees, members of a single unit (#2) of CUPE Local 3909 have been on strike since March and voted earlier in the week to end their strike. Union headquarters nullified that vote and ordered a re-vote because “the number of ballots did not match the number of signatures of eligible voters.” In the end, contract faculty voted a second time to accept the university’s offer.

SCOC UPHOLDS LAW SOCIETIES AGAINST CHRISTIAN SCHOOL

The Supreme Court of Canada has voted 7 to 2 to permit law societies in Ontario and BC to deny membership at the bar to graduates in law of Trinity Western University. TWU is an unaffiliated Christian school which holds that marriage is only legal between a man and woman, specifically barring LGBTQ students. The court’s majority rested its case on the social imperative of inclusiveness. The two-judge minority made its case on the need for society to tolerate many opinions.  Trinity Western University vs. Law Society of Upper Canada

Polls reveal most Americans agree with Canada on Trump

Polls done in Canada and the US by Ipsos reveal that US citizens by and large agree with Canadians that Donald Trump is out of line in attacking this country over the Prime Minister’s resistence to tariffs. Polls done for Global News and Reuters show similar results. Global News says its poll shows 72 percent of  Canadian respondents approve of how Trudeau is handling the situation. Only 14 per cent of Canadian respondents said the same about Trump. As for Americans, 57 per cent of respondents approved of how Canada is handling the dispute — while only 37 per cent said they approved of how Trump was doing.

Determined cops find getaway car in playground shooting

Superintendent Mark Barkley has provided an update on the investigation into Thursday’s shooting at the Scarborough playground where two sisters were wounded. He said the girls, 5 and 9, are recovering. The getaway vehicle has been found abandoned. Supt. Barkley declined to say whether it had been stolen. He was firm about not jeopardizing future prosecutions and therefore declined many questions. He is, as seen here, grim. His manner is reflective of the outrage felt throughout the City administration and police service, as well as by the people, at the wanton disregard shown for life in this shooting.
