Mayor John Tory announced the return of Victoria Day fireworks at Ashbridges Bay Park starting at 10 p.m. on Monday, May 23. This will be the first public in-person fireworks display on Victoria Day in Toronto since 2019. The 13-minute show is a free City of Toronto event that will feature 2,000 individual fireworks – spectators can expect a spectacular finale. The fireworks display is weather dependent. Ashbridges Bay Park is located on Lake Shore Boulevard East at the foot of Coxwell Avenue and is readily accessible by public transit. Attendees are encouraged to leave personal vehicles at home and take public transit or Bike Share as a greener, faster and more affordable way of getting to and from the festivities.

City of Toronto announced that ActiveTO will take place over the Victoria Day long weekend along sections of Lake Shore Boulevard West, Bayview Avenue and The Meadoway. These road closures are recurring short-term closures of major streets adjacent to highly used trails — ActiveTO routes are open to pedestrians and people cycling and closed to vehicles. Residents planning to use ActiveTO routes are asked to access them by bike or as a pedestrian, as there is no available on-site parking and limited nearby parking.

Heart & Stroke will be holding its Ride for Heart event along the Lake Shore Boulevard West ActiveTO closure on Sunday, May 29. The event aims to raise awareness about heart disease and stroke and will be a warm-up for the Manulife Heart & Stroke Ride for Heart, which celebrates its 35th anniversary on June 5. Heart & Stroke street teams will be on site on May 29 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

A Facebook post from Green Canoe (900 Millwood Rd.) has announced the sale of their business and expressed thanks to the community for all the support they have received over the years. They will still operate for another two weeks before handing over the reins to the new owners on May 29th. The announcement reads:

Advance voting starts today in Ontario. Voters can cast their ballot at any advance voting location in their electoral district from 10 AM to 8 PM (Eastern Time) for the next 10 days. Advance voting is also available at returning offices and satellite offices from May 21 to May 27. 2 of Ontario’s 4 major party leaders have been hit with COVID-19 just ahead of the election. NDP Leader Andrea Horwath and Green Party Leader Mike Schreiner have both tested positive for the virus. PC leader Doug Ford and Liberal leader Steven Del Duca have so far been spared, but time will tell. It was only days ago that they participated in a televised debate hosted by TVO. CBC Story.
As if dealing with a global pandemic was not enough, we are now faced with another health risk. Some media have called it a cousin to smallpox. Toronto Public Health (TPH) says as of Thursday morning, it is “not aware of any local cases” of monkeypox in the city.
