Lake Leaside rediscovered on FB by way of artistic photo

Lake Leaside, the flooded construction site east of Laird Drive, was rediscovered on Facebook over the weekend. By Monday evening there were more than 30 posts from readers who found it both pretty and potentially quite perilous. People speculated about water skiing there, stocking ducks and perhaps sending home a postcard from this charming place. Others worried about kids getting hurt or killed in the murky waters. Lake Leaside was first brought to the attention of the community and given its name by The South Bayview Bulldog on April 11, 2017. It was described as a graveyard of big box retail dreams. Geoff Kettel read the post and asked Councillor Burnside to check on the somewhat rickety fences that surrounded the huge site. A decision was taken to drain the lake. The original fences had fallen down and permitted easy access on the stretch of City road off Wicksteed known as Vaughan Street. But the City sewer system was (and probably is) unable to take a full flow of water from the site. It took until August 2017 to drain Lake Leaside. All Lake Leaside

Before police arrived at the casino, the woman, said to be 21, called them back to say someone gave her $20 and she no longer needed their help. Police confirmed with the casino management that the woman was safe.

CUPE members able to forfeit pay to prosecute York strike

CUPE members have voted in substantial numbers ranging from 75 to 68 percent depending on the local, to reject the offer of York University. The strike has been underway since early March and information is fragmentary on the validity of the union demands. The strike is said to be about “job security for part-time workers and the path to full-time tenured employment for contract faculty.”  Read money. But what this might mean in real terms is entirely beyond sensible calculation. However it is apparently not so high that CUPE members are unable to forfeit pay in order to prosecute the strike.

Ron McLean recounts heartbreaking confusion in hospital

Ron McLean has told of a horrifying mistake which led parents of a Humboldt Bronco’s team member to think they were at the bedside of their son. In fact, the boy had died in the crash. Then, it must soon be asked who runs Canada. NDP members in British Columbia are jubilantly saying the Kinder Morgan pipeline is dead. The Ottawa government is “advising” the BC government to stop the blockade. Below that, the harrowing ride of passengers on several cars of a train in India that became detached from the engine. Finally, the case of the wrong-way chimney demolition in Denmark. Right into a building.

Notley warns “whatever is necessary” to get pipeline to sea

“YOU CAN MESS WITH TEXAS BUT YOU CAN’T MESS WITH ALBERTA”

A decision by Kinder Morgan to apparently mollify the anti-pipeline government of British Columba has brought a fierce response from Alberta Premier Rachel Notley. KM said today that it will scale back “non-essential activities” on the project. Notley responded by demanding that the federal government take “concrete action” to stop her NDP brothers in BC from stonewalling the project. “You can mess with Texas but you can’t mess with Alberta,” Notley warned. She said that her government is prepared, if necessary, to buy into the pipeline project. If that is necessary she said BC will be dealing with a “significantly more determined” player in Kinder Morgan than it has seen so far. Her tone was icy and not unlike a parent reprimanding a child as she said that her province is determined to do “whatever is necessary” to see the pipeline completed.

Where will Chicks, Vipers battle now that the Bunker’s gone

It may not be your passion, but the Toronto Roller Derby League has a large loyal audience in the City. The league has teams called the Gore Gore Roller Girls, Death Track Dolls, Vipers, Snake City Bandits and Chicks Ahoy. But now they are out of a home because the auditorium at Downsview Park, long the scene of roller dramatics, will be leased out as a studio for film and move production. They called it the Bunker. It is, as league president Mina Smart says, a significant setback. No ordinary empty garage will replace it. Loyalists fear the loss of the fighting roller ladies. Look at the video from a year ago to get a sense of the competition. Let them know if you have a big gymnasium for rent.
