A halfway house for federal penitentiary inmates will open shortly on Eglinton Ave. West at Glenholme Ave. At the rear, the two-floor building overlooks St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic Elementary School on Glenholme Ave. The CBC is saying Tuesday that area residents have been caught off guard and are concerned. Some say they should have been consulted. It appears the John Howard Society has occupied the building at 1669 Eglinton Ave. W. for three or four years but has not housed former inmates there until now.

Digger has died. The 17-year-old horse rescued Friday from a filthy sewage hole succumbed Sunday to what his owners suspect was a stroke. He had been in the hole for six days. “We honestly don’t know what happened. He took a turn last night and was distressed, finally collapsed at 2 a.m. and passed away in my mom, dad’s and sister’s arms in my mom’s backyard in Waskatenau, Alta,” Kristiana Klause told CBC News in a Facebook message Sunday. She said she was glad the animal did not die in the sewage hole. Digger survives six days in filthy sewage hole before rescue
Looking for bowler to operate Coxwell Ave. 5-pin throwback
by •
Toronto real estate agent Peter Knox is trying to find a tenant who wants to run the 1950s Shamrock Bowl bowling alley at 280 Coxwell Ave above the Goodlife Fitness. Mr. Knox discovered the third-floor business, deserted by the operator when he and his girlfriend were walking in the neighborhood recently. Shamrock Bowl appears from time to time in media recollections of quaint spots around town. It was built in 1952. As reported by the CBC this week, Shamrock Bowl still has all of the same mechanisms in place making it a fully functioning retro bowling alley. But the truth must be told there does not seem to be much interest in it. Shamrock Bowl has been on the market ever since a makeover six years ago.

Digger survives six days in filthy sewage hole before rescue
by •
A 17-year-old horse named Digger has survived six days down a sewage hole in Alberta submerged up to his nose in filthy water. His owners, the Danyluk family, found him by luck. One family member re-searched an area near the horse pen and heard a sound. Then she found the old hole where Digger had crashed through a rotted wooden cover. The hole was drained and a veterinarian ventured down there to strap a harness on the forlorn beast. Then a fork lift slowly raised Digger to the grassy pasture where he fell on his side and reportedly slept for four hours. When he woke, Digger was hungry. He consumed everything nearby from grass to timbits. All of this at the hamlet of Abee about 50 km northeast of Edmonton.
Dina Rock shares her recipe for homemade Sauerkraut

Dina Rock, the South Bayview pickling entrepreneur, has put down her Fall stock of Mighty Fine Brine products at a large commercial facility. She still does the work personally but now has trained staff and a greater pickling capacity. It’s a move which will permit Dina to fill the demand for her dills, horseradish dills, warm chili garlic dills, garlic and dill studded sauerkraut and Kraut-Chi Sauerkraut, a Korean twist on this traditional European condiment. We profiled Dina in May: South Bayview’s Dina Rock runs Mighty Fine Brine pickles
MAKING YOUR OWN SAUERKRAUT
Dina visited Andy Elder’s Gourmet Meat Store on Laird Drive last week to quarter, chop and massage a Cannonball Cabbage into Sauerkraut. Here’s the recipe.
Quarter the cabbage, remove the core, and slice the cabbage into thin strips (shoot for around 1/4″ wide).
Massage/knead the salted cabbage for about 8-10 minutes until the cabbage releases it juices.
Push the cabbage into the jar, then thoroughly pack down. The goal is to eliminate as many air bubbles as possible.
Cover the exposed cabbage with brine, leaving 1″ of headspace at the top. Any cabbage floating above the brine is susceptible to mould.
Secure a cheesecloth around the lid and keep it at room temperature for 3-4 days.
After 3 days, remove the cheesecloth and cover the jar with a lid.
Place it in the refrigerator for a minimum of 7 days before consuming.
- 1 head green cabbage*
- 1 tablespoon sea salt per head of cabbage
- 1 Clean glass mason jar
- Cheesecloth
- Rubberband
- If you need extra brine: 1 additional tablespoon of sea salt and 4 cups non-chlorinated water
