•Energetic volunteers gathered outside Tufts Valu-Mart at 1500 Bayview Saturday to build 150 Thanksgiving hampers to be distributed to needy families by the Daily Bread Food Bank. Sarah, Claire and the local Leaside community were joined by co-sponsors Mike Tufts and Patrick Rocca. Mom and dad Lynda DeBono and Mark Jordan were there as usual. The barbecue of hot dogs and hamburgers, courtesy of Tufts Valu-Mart, is one of the best.
Cold front wind warning predicts gusts of 80 km/h in GTA

•Significant winds of 60 km/h and wind gusts up to 80 km/h are expected to develop overnight Saturday with the arrival of a cold front. Stronger wind gusts may exceed 80 km/h over some areas, most likely north of Eastern Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, as well as over higher terrain. Winds of this magnitude can toss loose objects and cause injury or damage. Gusty winds can also damage soft shelters, tents and awnings. Environment and Climate Change Canada will closely monitor the situation and issue wind warnings if necessary — Environment Canada.

•It looks like the Saturday morning weather will hold for events at the Bayview Valu Mart, 1500 Bayview Ave. for those who wish to donate to Sarah and Claire’s Food Drive. The annual building of Thanksgiving hampers will start at 3 p.m.in the parking lot. To the right, Mayor Tory announced the appointment of Ana Bailao (Ward 18 Davenport) as the new deputy mayor representing the Toronto and East York Council. They are seen with Joe Mihevc (Ward 21 St. Paul’s). T&EY sits west of Bayview Ave. Then a shameless promotional picture but nice anyway of three smiling Wildcats (ever seen a Wildcat grin?) on World Smile Day (who knew?). A three-alarm fire of unknown origin has destroyed a town house in Mississauga Saturday morning on Bloor St. near Dixie Rd. Two fire personnel were treated for minor distress before the fire was knocked down.

Rebel Tim Hortons franchises sue parent Restaurant Brands

•Two rebel Tim Hortons franchises are suing parents company Restaurant Brands International alleging its subsidiary and several executives have subverted their right to associate. A monetary claim does not appear current filings. The defendants belong to the ad hoc Great White North Franchisee Association.which was formed in March. At that time the group accused their parents of squeezing their franchises so tightly that business was suffering. Tim Hortons called the lawsuit “unfounded” in a statement by its media relations team. It said Tim Hortons has always been clear that we will not interfere with our franchisees’ right to associate and that remains true today. The GWNFA, whose membership is unclear, which incorporated in March to raise franchisee concerns over the management of the brand, alleges RBI began legal action late last month against a group of GWNFA board members that it says provided confidential information that was then leaked to a Canadian newspaper.
MATTHEWS, SANDALS WILL NOT RUN IN 2018
Deputy premier Deb Matthews, who sits in London and Treasury Board President Liz Sandals, a Guelph MPP, will not run in next year’s general election, they announced separately today They both said that the sliding fortune of the Ontario Liberal Party is not the reason for their decision. Matthews will remain as the Liberals’ campaign co-chair through the election, saying she has enormous respect for Premier Kathleen Wynne. “I am confident that, on June 7, 2018, the people of Ontario will give her and her team the mandate to continue to serve,” Matthews wrote in a statement Friday. Sandals is 70 and Matthews 64.
