The pedestrian bridge between The Bay/Saks and Toronto Eaton Centre will come down this weekend. Queen Street West between Yonge Street‎ and Bay Street will be closed to vehicles from 11 p.m. tonight until 5 a.m. Monday. Eastbound traffic on Queen Street will be diverted at Bay Street while westbound traffic will be diverted at Yonge Street. Sidewalk Superintendents of the virtual kind may find interest in the linked details of how excavation work is being done at the Laird LRT station site at Laird Drive and Eglinton Ave. It’s described as the sequential excavation method (a mining technique) suitable apparently to digging out the space needed for underground platforms and concourse levels. Metrolinx says this means “once the excavation is complete for the station entrances, a total of two at Laird, we will start mining sideways under the roadway to make room for the platforms and concourse. In contrast, the cut and cover method means excavating vertically from the road.” Going deep into the ground at Laird Station.  Ah yes, but will the cars be green or red?

The body of a woman in her 70s was found Thursday evening in a parking lot as 3735 Dundas Street West. She was taken to hospital where she later died. Police say she may live nearby.

Faith Dickenson, 14

An inspiring 14-year-old girl from Peterborough has received the Princess Diana Award from the hands of Prince William for her compassionate efforts to comfort those suffering from cancer. Faith Dickenson was off to the ceremony honouring 20 young people for similar selfless decency at St. James Palace in the British capital this week. It happened almost without a word being said to her friends at school. Many thought Faith was off school because of illness. Faith has spent much of her young life repeating a kindness done for her sick aunt. She made the woman a blanket to ward off the chills that accompanied treatment for Stage 4 breast cancer. That was five years ago and as reported by the CBC, Faith has since sent 3,500 fleece blankets around the world through her non-profit organization, Cuddles for Cancer.

It has been a week now since word was released that new fencing would be placed along much or all of so-called Lake Leaside. And indeed, a lot of work has been done. There are hundreds of feet of sturdy new wire fence on the north end of the water reaching almost to Brentcliffe Rd. Patching has been done at some weak looking point, as illustrated above by before and after pictures at the end of a lane off Laird beside the TD bank complex. But the water, which is supposed to be drained, remains deep. This may be a result of the physical capacity of City facilities to accommodate it. Rain delay in Atlanta a good guess but many wondered

A number of fans were on social media Thursday night asking just where the Blue Jays game had gone. It was fairly easy to speculate that there was a rain delay in Atlanta, but it seemed a well-kept secret on Sportsnet. The game resumed about 9 p.m. without, of course, Kevin Pillar. He was out for shouting an epithet at an Atlanta pitcher. It was the other F-word with LGBTQ insinuations. Pillar has been suspended for two games.

Author and historian Professor Michael Bliss dead at age 76

Michael Bliss has died at age 76. Bliss was an award-winning historian, author and long-time resident of Bessborough Drive in Leaside. Bliss was known as one of the country’s leading intellectuals and wrote 14 books on an array of subjects, from business to politics, including the Governor General’s Award–nominated Plague: A Story of Smallpox in Montreal. His published work also includes biographies of legendary figures in the medical community, such as Harvey Cushing, William Osler, and Frederick Banting. Bliss retired from U of T’s department of history in 2006 after a nearly four-decade career during which he earned the elite rank of University Professor, an honour “conferred upon less than two percent of tenured faculty,” according to the school — CBC  Acclaimed Canadian historian, author Michael Bliss dies at 76
