by •
Ryerson professor of mathematics, physics and computer science David Grimshaw died January 3, 2017. He was 76. John David Clifford Grimshaw was a graduate of North Toronto C.I. With his wife of 40 years, Roberta Imboden, he became a world traveller. His lifelong passion was chess and he became a Canadian Junior Chess Champion in 1959. Some Saturday street scenes in and near South Bayview
by •
On Balliol St. traffic was blocked on the west side at Mt. Pleasant as a sky crane lifted replacement elevator parts to the mechanical room atop the roof of a Davisville Ave. apartment. Upper right we see the arrows of Eglinton Ave E. These flashing right, left, right pointers near Forman Ave. signal the serpentine route required to keep from falling into an LRT excavation. Lower right is a freshly out-shopped TTC bus in the new livery. This paint job deletes the 45 degree angle in the belt-line and colours the top of the bus red, it seems. But will it, as one wag wondered, make it arrive on time?

B.C. City employs GPS darts to revolutionize car chase
by •
The City of Delta B.C. is apparently the first community in Canada to employ so-called GPS darts to safely apprehend fleeing drivers. The trial program has seen eight Delta police cars equipped at $1,200 a vehicle by the Delta Police Foundation. The system is made and sold by a Virginia Beach, Virginia firm, StarChase Pursuit Management Technology and is said to provide a safe alternative to the dangerous practice of car chases. Officers launch a GPS dart from the front of their cruiser, it sticks to the rear of the escaping vehicle, police dispatch then monitors the fleeing vehicle and reports its location to nearby units when it is parked. The material online does not appear to state a range for the dart but logically line-of-sight would be required.
