Justin Bieber’s Friday night recital at Richmond St. pub

A man walked into a bar on Richmond Street Friday night and surprisingly it was Justin Bieber. He watched the Raptors game, didn’t get into a fight and then asked if he could play the piano. He did — some Beatles, some Beethoven. Nice. Owners of the Fifth Pubhouse released the video Sunday. The video is dark for those hoping for concert venue quality.  Shorter  Longer

Toronto Police will launch the one-week  STEP UP and Be Safe pedestrian safety campaign Monday morning. The campaign will try to remind drivers and pedestrians alike about the perils of November darkness. Police officers and parking enforcement officers will be pay attention to those motorists, cyclists and pedestrians who commit offences in the vicinity of pedestrian crossovers, crosswalks, intersections, school zones (particularly primary schools) and crossing areas frequented by seniors. Bid for downtown high-rise freeze will resonate uptown too

Kristyn Wong-Tam (Ward 27) has sent a letter to Toronto and East York Community Council proposing a one-year moratorium on the development of new tall residential buildings in the downtown core. She expresses concerns ranging from a housing oversupply to old and insufficient infrastructure. She cites congestion, pedestrian and cyclist safety and disruption to business as well. The linked story by development site BuzzBuzzNews offers counter opinions from developers. One of the most cogent is that fees extracted from builders for infrastructure have gone into general revenues. These “Section 37” monies are often discussed by Councillors like miraculous manna. This said, Wong-Tam’s plea for a slowdown will resonate with some in South Bayview and elsewhere too, especially along Eglinton most notably Wards 22 and 26. BuzzBuzzNews

Scrapyard smoke seen across Toronto on clear Sunday

Smoke was rolling across the sky Sunday morning from an auto storage or scrapyard fire on Union Street in the west end. For all the smoke however the fire service did not declare alarms for this fire. It was easily handled. TFS sources identify the location as Stark Auto at 160 Union. Union is in the Stockyard District north of St. Clair beside the rail line. The firm is next door to Auto World Auto Wreckers. No one has been hurt and the fire is now under control. Twitter posts of smoke.
