Grade 1-3 students from Children’s Garden School (at 670 Eglinton Ave. East) competed in their annual Cross Country Championships at Sherwood Park Wednesday. The conditions were perfect. The rain held off and the sun shone through the beautiful fall leaves. The children ran the 1.5 kilometres course with great determination and enjoyed the friendly competition between their school houses — Delphinus, Draco, Pavo and Pegasus. The children have been training hard since early October during their early morning sessions at Leaside Fields. All that hard work paid off.
Penny Oleksiak and many of her fellow Olympic athletes visited the House of Commons today for a joyous welcome by MPs, a grand and disorganized tramp around the floor of the House and pictures with the Prime Minister. For Oleksiak, the pride of Toronto Beaches and of all Canada, it was a return visit. The unassuming swimming star, 16, recalled that she had come there at the age of five but wasn’t allowed to walk around inside. Some improvement in her welcome and for a very good reason.
Discussions ran late but a deal was agreed before 6 a.m. It’s believed everyone got to class on time.

The family of Leo Cornacchia has hung a picture of Leo looking as he did to so many of those who recall him well. One former customer has written a note and taped it on the window. “I always enjoyed coming to your shop to get my hair cut,” says Scotty. “Always a pleasure talking. Rest in peace, Leo. You will be missed.” “Leo the Barber” was valued friend and tradesman“

Vanessa Monteith is messaging friends in the Sunnybrook Dog Association on Facebook that a film crew is building a set in the parking lot “up by the barns”. Apparently it puts a crimp in dog walking. She goes on to say that 10 spots are allocated for public parking but today (Thursday) through Sunday the crew is filming so it isn’t clear whether there will space or not. Vanessa says the set is going to be a ship in a scene set in PEI. “Oh Hollywood,” she adds. The series is called Northwoods Anne, apparently a sequel to Anne of Green Gables.
The criminal behaviour of those who would threaten the safety of kids at Halloween is hard to fathom but in the neighborhood northwest of St. Clair Ave W. and Caledonia Road someone was handing out dishwashing pods as candy treats. Children trick-or-treating with their parents in the Prescott Avenue, Blackthorn Avenue and Rockwell Avenue areas found the pods on getting home. As is known, the pods can be harmful if ingested, especially to children. If swallowed, detergent in even small amounts can be caustic and cause burns to the mouth, throat and airways.

A strike of a some school bus drivers is possible Thursday If there is a work stoppage, 8,500 students from both the Toronto District School Board (TDSB) and Toronto Catholic District School Board (TCDSB) would be affected. In October, the TDSB sent a letter home with students warning them that in the event of a strike, “there will be no school bus services.” They say that if the strike goes ahead, they will notify parents immediately. The drivers are said to make $65 a day.
