With post-season play comes the big screen home for ticketless fans known as The Bird’s Next. It sets up at Nathan Phillips Square on Tuesday, October 4.  Fans can watch the American League wildcard game with the Jays battling the Baltimore Orioles. Shahnaz Khan CBC

It seems so obvious there ought to have been a rule a long time ago. Take away cell phones from kids while they are in class so the teacher can drill a little knowledge into them. That’s what Northern Secondary School teacher Shahnaz Khan is asking in a letter to area parents. Khan says what every sensible mother and father must know already.  Cell phones distract teens and adults too, frequently when they are supposed to be paying attention to something else — something important. Ms. Khan is an English teacher at NSS. She tells the CBC that she has had to adapt as students increasingly come to class tethered to handheld screens. And while the devices are sometimes used as part of the learning experience, very often they simply distract — both the students using them and others in the room. It is an entirely reasonable idea. The need to ask is a sign of how dizzy society has become that it is even open to question. In recent years we have seen lawsuits launched by parents who wanted to prevent breath tests for students entering the Spring Prom. The right to go to a school event intoxicated.

Leaside Junior Wildcats earned a second shut out of the early Provincial Women’s Hockey League season Sunday with a 1-0 victory at home over the formidable Stoney Creek Sabres. It was a thrilling game watched by an enthusiastic cadre of fans of both teams. No doubt the competing contest between the Blue Jays and the Boston Red Sox kept many in front of their television sets. The lone goal was scored by Leaside newcomer Myah Bowal assisted by Payton Bray at 10.37 of the first period. Both teams played hard but it may be fair to say that Shanna Dolighan in the Wildcats net represented a margin of victory. Among other defensive skills, her glove catches of longer shots seemed to demonstrate an impressive coordination. The Sabres sit third in the PWHL with three wins and two ties for their five games played. Oakville and Nepean are one and two. Leaside is at seventh with two wins and a tie in three games

The Blue Jays will host the AL wild-card game against the Baltimore Orioles Tuesday night at the Rogers Centre. They won the prize with hard play and good luck, beating the Red Sox 2-1 Sunday afternoon and sneaking into post season play when Detroit lost 1-0 at Atlanta. Boston will travel to Cleveland for Game 1 of the ALDS on Thursday, while Texas will host either the Orioles or Blue Jays on Thursday.

• The New York Mets host the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday for the NL wild-card game.
• The Washington Nationals host the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday for Game 1 of the NLDS.
• The Chicago Cubs host the NL wild-card winner on Friday for Game 1 of the NLDS.

For those who want to go right inside baseball, the rarely called error of balking is a study. A pitcher was previously allowed to feint toward third (or second) base, and then turn and throw or feint to first base if his pivot foot disengages the rubber after his initial feint. This is called the “fake to third, throw to first” play. However, Major League Baseball classified this as a balk beginning with the 2013 season. It happened Saturday when Roberto Osuna committed a balk and the penalty was a run as Boston got to walk home Mookie Betts from third to tie the game. The Jays finally won it but the error seems both careless and complex. Here is a neat video showing pitchers getting caught balking. Watch for the game that is won when the man on third walks because of a balk.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge thanked Canadians for their hospitality Saturday as they boarded a seaplane which took them to their jetliner and the flight home. Prince William and Kate said the trip was memorable because they brought Prince George, 3, and Princess Charlotte, who is 16 months, with them for the children’s first visit to Canada. “We feel very lucky to have been able to introduce George and Charlotte to Canada,” Prince William said in a statement. “This country will play a big part in the lives of our children and we have created such happy memories for our family during this visit.

Two Toronto police officers are recovering after they were struck by an SUV which fled after hitting them at King and Brant Streets Saturday 9:30 p.m. The two officers were taken to hospital to be assessed as a precaution after being struck, paramedics said.

Leaside Junior Wildcats won a convincing 5-0 home-opener against the Kingston Ice Wolves Saturday night. The Cats gobsmacked Kingston when they scored the first two goals short-handed. Emma Pye then went on to get a hat trick.

SCORING

There was no scoring in the first period but Leaside poured it on in the second with two goals less than a minute and a half apart while short-handed on a Mariah Hinds penalty for slashing. The surprise markers by Emma Pye (assist Samantha Jones) and Olivia Reid (unassisted) seemed to knock the starch out the Kingston team. Other scoring came from Kristin Della Rovere (assist Mariah Hinds) and then two more in the third, both by Emma Pye with assists from Madison Heeney and Samantha Jones on the fourth goal and Olivia Reid on the fifth.

KATIE BAR THE DOOR

Kate Mowbray in the Leaside net blocked all 21 shots Kingston fired at her. She robbed the Ice Wolves on a couple of dangerous rebound shots early in the second. Whitney Morton in the Kingston goal faced 39 shots and saved 34.
