Barbecue and food drive kickoff today at Grilltime

Sarah and Clair’s Food Drive will kickoff on Saturday, September 24 starting at noon with a barbecue at Andy Elder’s Grilltime meat store, 62 Laird Drive at Kenrae Road. This annual food drive inspired by two Leaside sisters will once again raise food for the Daily Bread Food Bank.  The drive is so named because of a child’s curiosity about just how children less fortunate than herself were fed. The barbecue will feature state-of-the-art cooking gear demonstrated by Broil King representative Naz and sausages donated by Black Knight Meats and Spices. They’ll be served on COBs buns. How about this. Amsterdam Brewery will be present to provide sampling. Say “hi” to Sarah and Claire, their parents Lynda Debono and Mark Jordan and grab a juicy plate of barbecue.  See you at the kickoff to Sarah and Clair’s Food Drive. Planned power outage for northeast Leaside Saturday

A notice from Toronto Hydro regarding a planned power outage for the northeast corner of Leaside has been re-published by Councilor Burnside’s office  It relates to upgrades of the delivery system and includes homes within the boundaries of Glenvale Boulevard (North), Rykert Crescent (East), Eglinton Avenue (South) and Laird Drive (West). The outage is scheduled from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, September 24, 2016

Mt. Pleasant Village BIA Harvest Fair set for Saturday

Harvest Fair gets underway at 10 a.m. with merchants and the BIA putting on a show. The weather looks to be pleasant with a high of 17 and mostly sunny skies.

Yonge subway closed south from Bloor up to Osgoode

This closure of the system for the weekend is caused by an old favorite at the TTC — track work. It will go on both Saturday and Sunday. There will be shuttle buses for the strong-hearted. The trains will turn north at Bloor and Osgoode stations.

New murals to be unveiled on Pottery Road on Sunday

New murals on the walls of the Pottery Road underpass will be unveiled by Mary Fragedakis (Ward 29) this Sunday, September 25, at 2 p.m.  Councillor Mary Fragedakis will be joined by artist Drew Mosley and representatives from the community. The murals, near the Todmorden Mills Heritage Site, are part of the StreetARToronto program.

CNBC speculates that Twitter will get takeover offer

CNBC says Friday that Twitter may soon receive an offer to be purchased by a tech firm — they name two who have reportedly shown interest. One is Google  and the other is Salesforce, a U.S. cloud computing company. Twitter has continued to be a puzzlement to many people because it is wildly popular with users but can’t seem to make money. No one knows — or even asks it seems — why Twitter doesn’t slap ads on all its pages the way Facebook does. FB has seen sidebar ads for everything from lonely ladies to the New York Times.

Are traffic lights set correctly at Millwood and Sutherland?

The accident at Millwood Road and Sutherland Drive in which an elderly woman was injured Tuesday should cause an examination of just how the traffic lights are working at this intersection. It is not clear what the woman, 79, was doing or whether she was crossing Millwood or Sutherland. We suspect the former. And as reported here a year ago, the red light for traffic (and pedestrians) on Sutherland lasts a remarkable 3.5 minutes. On installation, a mere 20 seconds was given for crossing Millwood. One can only ask whether traffic on Millwood Road is so  urgent that it requires this kind of extended green. In any case, the lights should be reviewed. The victim was said to be breathing and conscious but bleeding from the head. Let’s hope for the best. Seems the 88B bus will wait 3.5 minutes at Millwood Rd.

Tenant uses law to avoid rent at Avenue Road duplex

James Regan

CBC writer Trevor Dunn chronicles the exploits of James Regan, 62, who has a history of not paying rent while he lives in pleasant places like the second-floor apartment he currently inhabits at Avenue Road and McMaster Ave in the Republic of Rathnelly.  Previously, Mr. Regan has been evicted, in the fullness of time, for failing to pay as much as $25,000 in rent. Now says Robin Ennis, owner of the Avenue Road duplex, she is getting the same treatment. “It’s been a living hell for the past two months,” Ennis said in an interview with CBC News. The matter is being heard by the Ontario Landlord and Tenant Board but an eviction hearing has been delayed because, Regan said, he had not been given proper notice. Legislation permits appeals of eviction orders. They can take as long as eight months to complete during which, on a previous occasion, Mr. Regan paid no rent whatsoever before having to leave. CBC

Yahoo! admits 500 million accounts hacked two years ago

Yahoo Inc has revealed that information associated with at least 500 million user accounts was stolen from its network in 2014 by what is believes was a “state-sponsored actor”. No further details of the perpetrator have been given. The company says personal data including names, email addresses, telephone numbers, dates of birth and hashed passwords may have been stolen. The size of this breach and Yahoo’s easy-going response — it has been two years — speaks about the firm’s wobbly status and the need for a rescue plan. As reported here, the planned takeover by Verizon is being questioned.

Vero Trattoria closed with nearly $51,000 rent overdue

Vero Trattoria at 1580 Bayview Ave. has been closed by the landlord. The bailiff visited Thursday, September 22, 2016. The notice states there are arrears in the rent of nearly $51,000.
