Twins Rosie and Ruby Formosa are about to begin school in London where they were born conjoined at the abdomen and sharing an intestine. They were given a 20% chance of survival. London has marked the 350th anniversary of the Great fire of London by setting fire to model of the City on a barge out in the Thames. According to the London Fire Brigade, the fire started on Sept. 2, 1666. As buildings were built closely together and were made of timber, the fire was able to spread easily. A drought caused by a dry summer and strong winds also made it possible for the fire to do significant damage. The linked CBC feature says the official death toll was just six people, but it is believed many others died from related causes. The fire was stopped days later on Sept. 6 by blowing up houses in the fire’s path to give it space to stop. Ultimately, over 13,000 homes were destroyed by the fire. The fire came at the end of the Great Plague, which overtook London for many months in 1665 and 66. Some 100,000 people died.
Both Summerhill Market grocery stores are open today. The original store at 446 Summerhill and 1054 Mt. Pleasant Rd store are open until 8 p.m.

At least 20 people were stung and many more terrorized near Los Angeles Saturday when a swarm of bees said to number in the thousands attacked people at a family reunion. It happened in the early evening at Cerritos Regional Park, about 20 miles south of Los Angeles. Witnesses tell KCBS-TV that there were thousands of bees chasing hundreds of people and that the insects seemed to be attacking people with long hair. The bees emerged from inside an underground utility box which they apparently called home. Police say the three people taken to the hospital are expected to be okay and that the bees left the park within an hour of the attack.

The Rexall Pharma Plus store at 732 Mt. Pleasant Rd. has closed for good. Customers are being told that their records are over at the Rexall Pharma Plus at 2300 Yonge Street between Eglinton Ave. and Roehampton Ave. Bulldog readers say the scuttlebutt in the Sobey’s next door in the Briton House building is that a Dollarama is set to open in the large storefront. Rexall employees are said to have been offered jobs at the new discount store. The closure of the pharmacy speaks of a strategic defeat for Rexall, which grabbed the site when Shoppers Drug moved across Mt. Pleasant to new premises a few years ago. It also makes one think about the proximity of two Dollarama stores — Bayview and Mt. Pleasant. They aren’t like Starbucks with one on every corner.
