Bloor Street between Shaw Street and Avenue Road should be avoided during the installation of bicycle lanes which is now ongoing. The bike lanes are part of a pilot project approved by city council in May. The project is said to be an attempt to discover the “impacts and benefits” of bikes lanes on Bloor.  All on-street parking will be removed on Bloor Street during the first few days of construction. About 1.3 percent of Canadians cycle to work every day.

The Globe and Mail says the Liberal government has confirmed it will overhaul the way Canada picks Supreme Court justices. It will, says the paper, open up a process that has been criticized as partisan and unaccountable. Former prime minister Kim Campbell is said to be about to become the chair a new seven-member advisory board that will be tasked with recommending candidates to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Thomas Cromwell. Whether this process will address the most common complaint  about the court is another matter. Typically, Canadians seem to care less about “secrecy” in the selection of judges than the court’s 21st Century appearance as a kind of parallel government to the elected one.

It will probably be soon enough if the Blue Jays never see Houston pitchers Michael Feliz and Chris Devenski again. Between them, the two relief hurlers shut down Toronto’s best batting talent Monday night through five overtime innings. It ended 2-1 Astros in the 14th.

The U.S. health authority in Atlanta has issued a warning to pregnant women Monday to avoid the Zika-stricken Wynwood Art District of Miami. It has told couples who have been there recently to delay having children for at least two months. This after the number of people feared infected through mosquito bites in the U.S. climbed to 14. The unusual warning comes from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. It also warns expectant mothers who have visited the neighbourhood since June to be tested. Meantime, Florida is working overtime to control the Zika.

Saddened patrons of Jim’s Restaurant are mourning the closing of the popular all-day breakfast joint at 897 Queen St. E Sunday and wonder if they will ever again see the enormous “hungry-man” breakfasts and huge sandwiches they loved so much. The place is part of a parcel of land that will become a condominium. Jim’s has been feeding the Leslieville crowd and a lot of outsiders too under three owners for 50 years. The heroic breakfast of three eggs, three slices of bacon, three sausages, a slice of peameal, toast and tea or coffee is legendary. The sandwiches featured Westerns (The Best Westerns) and bacon sandwiches that were like eating pork chops on bread. Many retailers will admire the cash-only business model, something that’s only justifiable with a large and loyal customer base.

A 15-year-old is off to a bad start after robbing two other teens in the middle of the night at gunpoint. He sprayed pepper spray on them then produced a weapon as they sat on a bench near Fenside Drive and Mills Road area. He is in custody facing several charges.

Larry Takahashi has been in prison for more than 30 years for raping an unknown number of women in and around BC’s lower mainland. Estimates of the number of victims range up to 100. Now he is to be granted day parole wearing an ankle monitor. The question echoing around the community is whether that is just a stupid thing to do. Is Larry Takahashi still dangerous at the age of 63? Some of his victims say it seems very likely that he is. Erica Hammermeister says she is still fearful of Takahashi. Fingerprint evidence in her home finally convicted the serial rapist. She thinks he should have been declared a dangerous offender.
