The strange new addition to Bayview and Belsize

Have you seen this?  Have you wondered what on earth this strange contraption attached to the hydrant at Bayview and Belsize could be?  Have no fear, The Bulldog is on the case…

We have learned that the very complicated looking mechanics attached to the hydrant outside of RBC is merely a device that will allow the Bayview-Leaside BIA Pixies to tap into City water in order to maintain the trees and plants that line Bayview Avenue.  In the past the Pixies have had to “borrow” water from retailers that have a main floor water source in order to fill their watering cans.  This hydrant contraption, in combination with the Pixies’ new water cart (coming soon!) will make life much easier for our hard working group of green-thumbs.  The Bayview-Leaside BIA Pixies are volunteers who donate their time and elbow grease to the neighbourhood, in order to help beautify Bayview.  Thank you Pixies.

Sunny holiday Monday on dynamic South Bayview Avenue

Eden marijuana sales at 1625 Bayview, the dark space painted black, has added a white button to permit entry into the pot shop after the violent robbery on April 25. Meanwhile at the now vacant Rosie’s Kitchen at 1543 Bayview there is heavy-duty work going on inside. Just listen at the door. And across the street at 1580 Bayview the owners of Mayrik, the new Eastern Mediterranean restaurant, say they will open for business on Tuesday, July 25. Bayview Pixies Debora Kuchme and JoAnn Davis were busy with planting Monday. Thank you ladies for your public-spirited and unpaid labour on behalf of the community. And finally, COBS will close for renovation from Tuesday, July 4 over to Friday, July 7.

Spring Sweep the Street volunteers clean South Bayview

Sweepers well-known and well-liked formed up at Bayview Ave. and Millwood Rd. Saturday morning to participate in the Bayview Leaside BIA Spring Sweep the Streets event. The annual clean up saw these volunteers do a thorough job of picking up cigarette butts and other litter, sweeping the gutters and bagging the trash for pickup by the City. On the BIA Facebook page Cecelia Pye writes that the BIA has received a New Horizens Grant for Seniors of $16,000 to further support the Bayview Pixies volunteer gardeners keep the street flowered and beautiful.

BUTTERFLYWAY

The Beach will be a designated Toronto neighbourhood for a planting of wild flowers as part of a project to provide landing places for bees and butterflies. The Great Canadian Butterflyway Project, being launched by the David Suzuki Foundation, involves the planting of the flowers in patches to provide food and shelter for native wild bees and local butterflies. The project has begun in five cities — Victoria, Richmond, Montreal, Toronto and Markham. In Toronto, the project is focused on the lawns and green spaces near Bathurst Street and St. Clair Avenue West and in the Beach.

Friend of trees, Helen Godfrey published in Globe and Mail

South Bayview Bulldog reader and Globe and Mail contributor Helen Godfrey

Helen Godfrey is published in the Globe and Mail Friday on a favorite subject — the care and feeding of trees. One of ours too. Local residents and readers of The South Bayview Bulldog know Ms. Godfrey for her many years of advocacy and hard work on behalf of the trees on Bayview Avenue and more recently as a member of that happy band of green thumbs known as the Bayview Pixies.

The Pixies’ solar lights bring Christmas cheer to Bayview

The Bayview-Leaside BIA Pixies have been braving the cold installing solar lights on the trees of South Bayview. Today Deborah Kuchme and Helen Godfrey hope to light up the final few trees. It’s been a tough slog, thank you for your hard work ladies! You’re making Bayview sparkle!

First October Apple Fest this Saturday and Sunday

By Cecelia Pye
Special to the South Bayview Bulldog

The Bayview Leaside BIA is hosting the first-ever October Apple Fest. This festival is a celebration of everything apple to pay tribute to the apple orchards that once graced our neighbourhood, like the Lea and Lawrence family farms. The Lea family maintained a large apple orchard on their 200-acre farm. The Lawrence family farms on the west also boast a rich history in apples.

October Apple Fest will take place this Saturday, October 22 and Sunday October 23 from 11 am to 5 pm along Bayview Avenue from Davisville Avenue to Soudan Avenue. There will be apple décor, apple cider and apple specialties. Feast your eyes on apple street art by the Toronto-based chalk artist Victor (#WhatsVictorUpTo). Listen to the sweet sounds of musicians playing both violin and banjo along Bayview Avenue, as well as a special student duet at Cavatina Violin Studio. Find the apple in your eye in the apple décor created by the Bayview Pixies.

There will be a number of a-peel-ing events and treats from the BIA members including salted apple caramel scones from Lit Espresso Bar, apple martinis at Original’s, apple treats for dogs at the Leaside Animal Clinic, apple spread at Dolce & Gourmando, cold pressed apple juice from Refuel Juice Bar and appletree smoked cheddar at Alex’s Farm Products.

There is also a special kids crafts and Lego drop off event at Bamboo Bay. Kids can build and create apple art for an hour and a half while parents are free to shop and stop for a bite to eat.

Don’t be a crab apple and join the fun at October Apple Fest!

An accomplished Bayview Pixie is a Jill of all Trades

The Bayview Pixies are a hearty band of horticultural handy gals who are committed to looking after the flowers and greenery on Bayview Ave. for the BIA. But this happy band, conceived by Debra Kuchme, turn out to be valuable Jills of all trades. Here we see a sign, one of many they created which will decorate trees on our favorite high street during the forthcoming Apple Fest on the weekend of October 22 and 23.
