TTC to end token and ticket sales inside subways stations

The TTC will cease the sale of tokens and tickets in stations as it pushes riders onto the Presto system. It begins on November 30. Tickets and tokens will still be available at most drugstores and other retail locations. It’s believed the TTC will eventually end the use of tokens and tickets.

Presto Schmesto

City News says the Presto electronic fare card system has been a tough sell since a recent audit found more than $3 million in fare revenue was lost because of faulty card readers on streetcars and in subway stations. That doesn’t include fares lost to those who simply sneak on and off streetcars without paying. Now, where are the car keys?

Should contractor be charged for blundering into subway?

Rumble Pontiac TV ad from 1981 a hoot from local history

A television commercial from 1981 selling used cars at Rumble Pontiac Buick has surfaced on the Retrontario site. Rumble was located on the corner of Bayview Ave. and Broadway Ave. It gloried in the musical catchphrase Ramble Into Rumble, which is included in the spot. Yet another hoot from local history. McMaster study says sugar, caffeine tied to teen media use

Teens who spend more time watching television, talking on mobile phones and using social media, a new study says, are more likely to drink sugared or caffeinated drinks than others. That’s the finding of a new study conducted by researchers at Hamilton’s McMaster University. They looked at US data from 32,418 students in Grades 8 and 10 and found those who spent an additional hour per day on TV were at 32 percent higher risk of exceeding World Health Organization (WHO) recommendations for sugar. Line One shut as outside construction breaks into tunnel

The TTC says a private contractor working at street level has drilled through a concrete subway tunnel, causing damage and extensive delays along Line 1 during the height of rush hour. Subway service was suspended both ways between Lawrence and St Clair stations about 2:30 p.m. Officials called the problem an infiltration of the tunnel. The project causing the intrusion is not named. At around 5 p.m., the TTC said they do not expect the closure to clear in time for the evening rush hour. Around 90 shuttle buses are running between York Mills and St. Clair stations, but customers are being advised to use alternate routes where possible. CP24 said a “reverse GO protocol” is also in effect because of the problem, meaning that customers can ride GO Transit between any two Toronto GO stations on a TTC fare.

Woes of Sussex, banks duped, Raptors and too many wives

ITV suggests that Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex, is on the outs with his brother, Prince William, over a decision to go to war with UK tabloids. Then, the big banks keep getting duped by hackers but it’s the customers who are hurt. Below that, fun with bobbleheads as City News wonders about the Raptors re-build. Finally, the king of Siam has two wives and (surprise) it’s causing him grief.

Liberals win good minority total, CPC prediction falls short

The Liberal Party will form a strong minority government. The party of Justin Trudeau won a second term but it will need the support of at least one other party in order to pass any legislation while it is in office. Public opinion surveys that telegraphed a CPC minority government appear to have been based on the popular sentiment in total, which the Conservatives won. (chart below).

Unassailable with NDP support

The outcome may well forecast a period of NDP-oriented legislation since the Trudeau government will be unassailable with New Democratic support. This is a good CBC analysis.

Toronto Liberal Red

Toronto was a Liberal bastion as the Trudeau party won every seat. Don Valley West MP Rob Oliphant was re-elected handily with more than 55 percent of the popular vote, although Conservative Yvonne Richardson had the support of more than 33 percent of voters. Mr. Oliphant handed out butter tarts from COBs during the vote count and no doubt found the evening exceedingly sweet

Eataly will open at Manulife on Wednesday, November 13

The opening of Eataly, the celebrated Italian sit down or walk about eating place, is now set for 5 p.m. Wednesday, November 13, according to the firm. The new Eataly is at the Manulife Centre on Bloor St. Reports suggest the first Toronto Eataly will rival international locations of the restaurant. Executive president Andrea Guerra has told the Financial Post that he sees another Eataly in Toronto in the coming months as part of other Canadian expansion. “First of all, Toronto probably, being the largest city, could host a second Eataly,” said Guerra. “And then, between Montreal and Vancouver, there could be another Eataly.”
