North York Community Council meeting Thursday has passed a motion introduced by Councillor Robinson that will reduce the speed limit on some 62 mainly residential streets and roads in Leaside. See the list here. The move will bring the limit on such street into conformity with other Midtown wards where limits have been reduced in recent months. In a statement, the Councillor blamed the growing popularity of GPS Navigation Applications like Waze for leading to added cut-through with drivers often operating at very high speeds. There was no mention of the long-term distortion in traffic patterns caused by LRT construction.
Traffic Management Plan
The Councillor said she had consulted with the Leaside Property Owners’ Association which asked her to move forward with a Traffic Management Plan that will allow Transportation staff to identify long-term, comprehensive solutions to these issues in consultation with the community. Within the Traffic Management Plan, staff should consider both traffic control and traffic calming measures including all-way stop locations, turn restrictions, speed humps, and other options that will address vehicle speed, volume, congestion, and traffic infiltration issues. At the time of writing, more than 1,500 Leaside residents have also signed a petition calling for a speed limit reduction throughout their neighbourhood.
