Canada warns China goers to beware of arbitrary local laws

Ottawa has updated its travel advisory for China, suggesting Canadians exercise a high degree of caution “due to the risk of arbitrary enforcement of local laws.” This comes after China revoked the jail sentence conviction of Robert Lloyd Schellenberg and said it would instead seek the death penalty. Schellenberg is accused of smuggling drugs. “We are constantly evaluating our travel advice for Canadians traveling to China, as we do for all countries around the world,” Global Affairs Canada said in a statement. “All Canadians who are considering travel to China should carefully review the Government of Canada’s complete Travel Advice and Advisory.”

Old sign on Queen recalls day of milliners and haberdashers

Renovation at 1412 Queen St. W. has revealed the sign of a 1930s women’s hat shop, Parkdale Millinery. It appears the sign, which has been partially disassembled but not yet destroyed, belonged to a business run by a man named Arthur Levine. Records show him there in 1931. Many stores have filled the space since then but Gordon Robb, who will open a cycle store there in March, says he would like to preserve the sign if he can. The sign recalls a time when women, and men too, wore stylish hats all the time when in public. Men visited a haberdasher to buy the necessary headgear. Holy Spaceballs!
