Two dead as vehicles crushed in gravel truck rear end

A collision between three trucks and an SUV on Highway 48 in Sutton has resulted in two fatalities. A boy, 10, was flown to HSC in Toronto hospital and is in stable condition. Another patient is in St. Michael’s Hospital with status unreported. OPP say this accident is a series of rear-end collisions in which a cube van and an SUV were caught between two gravel trucks. The deaths occurred in the cube van and SUV. It appears that construction in area required traffic to stop and that the fourth vehicle, a gravel truck with a pup trailer, did not.

Sam’s sign, the house-price map and the monster doomed

Ryerson University says that Sam Sniderman’s 1960s neon marvel is being worked on and a debut of the sign in its new home high above Dundas Square may be expected sometime in the Fall. Ryerson says it is planning a ceremony marking the lighting. Upper right, the Globe and Mail has published this map which charts how resale home prices have responded to the new housing tax in recent weeks. Remarkably, some areas continue to creep up. Here in South Bayview, there has been a slight decline. And in Mississauga, Ontario Superior Court has ordered the owner of an unfinished 6,600 square-foot monster home in Brampton to destroy it within 120 days after a legal battle that stretches back almost five years. It was thrown up when the City mistakenly issued a building permit.

Teen boy shot during breakin, car jacking in Mississauga

An armed teen, 15, one of possibly three perpetrators, was shot by Peel police during what appears to have been a rampage of breakins and attempted car jackings at and around the Credit Vally Town Plaza at Creditview Rd and Brittannnia Rd. early Thursday. One woman said a young man with a gun opened the door to her car. He seemed dazed when she told him to shut the door. Then he left. The wounded youth was reported to be conscious when taken to hospital. Two of the youths fled in a vehicle. The SIU is investigating.

Parking-lot rage reveals civilizing effect of women on men

The Video Wheel begins at home this Wednesday with a YouTube chronicle of an (um) parking-lot rage event outside the Cedarbrae No Frills. To be sure, this has nothing to do with the Loblaws sub. It is, however, heartening to see the women telling the men to stop. Was it Margaret Mead who said civilization is solely the result of the moderating effect of women on men? Then, for reasons not very apparent, No Frills has launched a quirky advertising campaign which among other oddities suggests that the cost of food is related to jazz trios playing in the produce department. All we can say is where? Below that, a charming report from City News on Officer Dale. Well done, guy. And finally, what do you do when your dog eats your wedding cake the day of the reception? Why you smile and pet him, of course.

Big boy’s toy found in Bobcaygeon by Leaside’s Andy Elder

Andy Elder of the Grilltime specialty meat shop on Laird Drive came upon this modified 1940 Dodge panel truck in Bobcaygeon last weekend and posted it. Before there were SUVs and minivans there were half-ton panels (like the Dodge posted by Andy) and the upscale commercial carrier known as the sedan delivery (lower right). Like most men, Andy was slightly enchanted by this boy’s toy and how those with enough money will fit the metal shell of these cars and trucks over the modern mechanicals of a “donor” vehicle offering air, power and automatic transmission.

She sought lip enhancement but came close to losing face

The treatment sometimes known as “lip-fill” is called a common cosmetic procedure by CBC writer Aaron Saltman. The trend is sought by women who want fuller, plumper lips like those of reality TV star Kylie Jenner. But a young woman from Toronto called Jenna is warning others about the dangers of home lip augmentation and lip-filler parties after a complication left her temporarily disfigured and at risk of losing her lip, nose and possibly even her eyesight had she not been professionally treated in time. Apparently the needle punctured a blood vessel. Some might call it a form of self abuse in pursuit of glamour. Sadly, it’s a human inclination that recurs. CBC
