The Moore Park Residents Association (MPRA) will hold its 2021 Annual General Meeting Wednesday, May 26, at 7:30 p.m. by video conference. Guest speakers will include Councillor Mike Layton. MPRA members will receive email with details and a Zoom link. Current members (or new members) of the MPRA can vote at the AGM. Among the many issues of interest raised in a newsletter Sunday is concern that people are breaching the construction fences at the new playground at Moorevale Park. And Past President Chris Lowry has written an account of some of the neighbourhood’s notable residents over the years.
As the application process for Moore Park to become a Heritage Conservation District is ongoing, it’s interesting to think about the remarkable history of our neighborhood. Everyone who lives in this area enjoys the rich variety of houses and gardens, representing 130 years of evolving architectural taste. Moore Park’s remarkable heritage homes have attracted a wide variety of famous people to live here, from rock stars to members of the royal family, including: actress Gina Lollobrigida, literary scholar Northrop Frye, physicist and educator Ursula Franklin, World War One flying ace Billy Bishop, co-discoverer of insulin Sir Frederick Banting, Lady Iris Mountbatten (granddaughter of Queen Victoria), sculptors Frances Loring and Florence Wylie, composers Healey Willan and Haygood Hardy, the photographers Ashley and Crippen, and, when they were children, both Jim Cuddy (Blue Rodeo) and one of our most famous Canadians, Neil Young (between Omomee and Winnipeg, enroute to L.A.).
