Driver squeezes out of crushed car on Hwy 401 at 427 ramp

OPP have tweeted pictures Friday of an accident in which a car was crushed under a transport truck on Highway 401 at the 427 ramp. The car was pushed into a concrete barrier leaving a foot or two for the driver to push the door open on the driver’s side and squeeze out. He’s apparently okay. And lucky. OPP_HSD

Twin frogs are awesome lead off to Friday’s Leaside gallery

Leaside United Church is eager to let you know that the (online) Awesome Sale is on. And you might easily croak with laughter at these two decorative froggies who fetched $10 in early bidding. Funds raised go to local outreach causes. Then at the upper right is the scene through the front door closet window of Tim Hicks home. He and the family are using the side door until these Robin fledglings stretch their wings. At centre right are some hard-skating ladies from the Leaside Wildcats as they collect items for the Thorncliffe Park TNO equipment drive. What a credit you girls are to yourselves and your parents. Below that is the inspiring view looking downtown from the Leaside Bridge as snapped by Natasa Bikova. Finally at the bottom, hats off to happy friends Dennis Priestley, Steve Morris, Peter Krol, Mike Hill, Jim (Alfie) Peneycad. They’ve been pals for over 60 years.

Ontario court judge Mahmud Jamal is nominated to SCC

Ontario judge Mahmud Jamal has been nominated to the Supreme Court of Canada. Judge Jamal, of Toronto, will if confirmed be the first person of colour to sit on the high court. He was a longtime litigator before becoming a judge of the Ontario Court of Appeal two years ago. He has appeared before the Supreme Court many times. He was born in Kenya, raised in England and finished high school in Edmonton before pursuing a bachelor of arts at the University of Toronto and law studies at McGill and Yale University in the US.

OPP round up a llama found wandering on Highway 400

OPP have captured and returned a llama that escaped from a farm off Highway 400. Crews blocked off all lanes except the HOV of the southbound highway approaching King Road as they attempted to catch the animal.



Cyclist’s “parting shot” extends street corner pushing match

A mindless scuffle between a pickup truck driver and a cyclist at Dufferin and College Sts. was recorded. The date is unclear but it seems to be recent. It sees the cyclist stab at the truck tire as the incident appears to be ending. That sparks a running shoving match between the two men which is finally ended by a policeman.

Patients escape death, injury in criminal attack at hospital

Computer criminals have attacked and shut down the digital communication system at Humber River Hospital. The hospital says it is restoring computers and hospital staff is carrying on. Such attacks are usually accompanied by demands for a Bitcoin ransom but nothing has so far been mentioned by the hospital about this. Cyberattacks at a hospital have the potential to kill a patient or patients. Humber River says the hospital’s information technology system was impacted around 2 a.m. Monday. In a statement posted online Tuesday afternoon, the hospital said “no confidential information was released” and the attack was “discovered almost immediately.” All of its IT systems were shut down, including the one for patient health records.

Etobicoke bakery fire a spectacle for neighbours, no injuries

Fire has destroyed Del’s Bakery at 344 Bering Ave in Etobicoke Tuesday evening. The spectacular blaze created a shocking spectacle for high-rise dwellers nearby as seen below. The fire started in an oven. No one was injured.

It seems that Leaside’s Christina Hotton makes the most astounding cakes including a graduation stunner that impressed this young lady. See the video on Facebook. Upper right, Conspiracy Pizza is open at the former Shoeless Joe’s location at 856 Eglinton East. These poetic pizza makers say that like sunflowers, pepperoni follows the sun as it travels through the sky. Hey, all good by the Bulldog. At centre right is the St. Cuthbert’s stone fence as snapped by Rudy Limeback in commemoration of Indigenous dead. Lower left, MP Rob Oliphant posted this shot of the Pride Toronto team with gift bags for Bayview Ave shoppers. At bottom right is the great Leaside Pub with a reminder that the patio is open.

 

Ontario ticket holder wins $9.4 million Lotto 649 jackpot

A player somewhere in Ontario is holding the winning ticket the weekend Lotto 649 $9.4 million jackpot. The winning ticket for the draw’s guaranteed $1 million prize was also sold in Ontario – as was the ticket for the $250,000 runner-up prize. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on June 16 will be an estimated $5 million.

Shirley Breen takes position with downtown BMO branch

Shirley Breen, a much-liked and active personality in the Mt. Pleasant Rd. business community, has joined the Bank of Montreal as manager at the King St. E and Church St. branch. Shirley was manager of the Meridian Trust outlet at 690 Mt. Pleasant when it opened in 2017. She was transferred in 2019 to another Meridian branch but continued to be active on the volunteer board of the Mount Pleasant Village BIA until her appointment to BMO.
