Will the vaccine stars align to permit opening of 2021 CNE?

Organizers of the Canadian National Exhibition are planning on opening this August if the vaccine stars are aligned to immunize all those who want a protective injection against C-19. Few things would declare a return to the old normal better or be more welcome. The Ex was cancelled in 2020 and organizers concede that might happen again, but they’re counting on the vaccine stars to conjure up a better outcome. Let’s hope so.

But City forces closure of many events in May, June

But the City of Toronto issued a news release Wednesday extending its cancellation of in-person major events until at least July 1. This will include Canada Day events. The decision was made in consultation with the Medical Officer of Health and others. Here are a few events that will be impacted. It seems like there will be many others, including the East York Canada Day Parade.

• Sporting Life 10k (will be a virtual event)

600,000 Ontario over-80s to get jab starting 3rd week Mar

Ontario will begin vaccinating some 600,000 citizens who are 80 and over in the third week of March, the government has announced. General Rick Hillier, the administrator of the vaccination program, announced that appointments will be taken for these vaccinations as of Monday, March 15. Hillier said the province expects to begin vaccinating those over the age of 75 starting on April 15 and people over 70 one month later. The target date for vaccinating people over the age of 65 is June 1, Hillier said. The news conference below was held Wednesday morning.

LUC renovations, vaccine raise hope of in-person gatherings

Leaside United Church has tweeted pictures of nearly-completed renovations at the church. New pew cushions are said to be vibrant blue and very comfy. The blue complements the stained glass windows. With vaccinations near, the prospects of gathering in person seem real again.

Tiger Woods badly hurt in SUV crash, undergoing surgery

Golf star Tiger Woods suffered leg injuries Tuesday in a vehicle rollover in suburban Los Angeles and was undergoing surgery, authorities and his manager said. His condition wasn’t yet clear. Woods was alone in the SUV and had to be extricated from it, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said in a statement. No other cars were involved in the wreck that injured the golfer — CBC

Police see mom, dad face-time between cars with kids along

Halton police have ticketed a driver after what appears to have been a family meeting by face-time between mom and dad with the kids aboard. Each parent was in a separate vehicle. A tweet from PC Marc Taraso tells of this chancy activity. No doubt it entertained the kids. The incident was discovered when PC Taraso looked into one of the vehicles at a stoplight.

McSorley’s to reopen Thursday for takeout from 2 to 8 p.m.

McSorley’s Saloon has announced that it will reopen for takeout on Thursday. The hours will be 2 to 8 p.m. seven days a week. McSorley’s closed in January during the worst of the pandemic

Bayview Wild Wing defiant as window smashed by vandals

Vandals smashed a window at the Wild Wing location on the northwest corner of Bayview Ave. and Millwood Rd. in recent hours. Such vandalism is contemptible at any time but especially difficult as local businesses struggle to stay open. The owner has published a defiant post on Facebook. We wish him good fortune.

Leaside Garden speaker will advise There’s a Tool for That

The Leaside Garden Society virtual meeting on April 8 will feature speaker Andrew Jenkinson. His topic will be There’s a Tool for That. Mr. Jinkinson has a diploma in Agriculture specializing in Horticulture from the University of Guelph. He has managed several large garden centers in the GTA. He is now with Lee Valley Tools since the Fall of 2017. Currently, he is managing the Scarborough location. Check the LGS site for information on joining the April 8 Zoom gathering.

UK court says Uber drivers are “workers” not self-employed

The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom has settled a five-year action by British Uber drivers in favour of the drivers. It declares that they are worke3rs, not self-employed free agents. It is a classification separate from a full-time employee but opens up the prospect of many additional benefits.

Those 80 and over to get the vaccine in March

The Ontario government said Friday that citizens over 80 will join those with priority for a vaccine shot in the next week or two. “We want to be able to start vaccinating those 80 years of age and older, and we will be reaching out to them in the next week to two weeks to tell them when their opportunity is going to become available, and where they can go to book their appointments, either online or through a phone line, and where they can get their information,” Gen. Rick Hillier, who leads Ontario’s vaccination effort, said at a news conference.
