Snow squalls on South Bayview — Ugh!

It did finally clear up a little but these gusty visits were hard to take. Nonetheless, we were not the only ones getting a late taste of winter. The street saw many shoppers after the early-afternoon snow stopped. And tomorrow, the Weather Channel is predicting variable cloudiness with a high of 7C.

First born of either sex to inherit the throne

The British government is set to change the succession laws to allow Prince William and Kate Middleton’s first born child whether it be a boy or girl to take the throne. It seems like the modern thing to do, according to Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg. It’s a fact however that there’s been only one brother and sister act in four generations and the girl was the junior. That was the current Queen’s children. Charles was born before Anne. Princess Diana (left) had sons only as did Queen Mary (right). The late Queen Mother Elizabeth, second from the right, had only daughters.

Lighting test in the cosmetics department

They were testing the newly-installed lights in the cosmetic department of the new Shoppers Drug Mart on South Bayview Saturday morning. It was rainy and gray outside but in the warmly-lit space inset it was summer. Well, a lot nicer than outside anyway. And it won’t be long before women will be walking among shelves full of everything from the most delicate make-up to the fiercest war-paint. Hurry up you guys!

Only 42% of coffee customers are “loyal”

If customer loyalty statistics are correct, it seems a good bet that many streets, including South Bayview might support more than two coffee shops. Right now we have Starbucks and Second Cup. But in the U.S, Starbucks customers in locations like South Bayview indicate that only 42 percent of them could be called “loyals.” In fact, it seems that significantly more — 53 percent — are “roamers.” These are people who find their coffee in the same neighborhood but from different coffee vendors. Similar studies at Dunkin Donuts and McDonald’s revealed the same thing. At least 53 percent of customers roamed. The significance of these patterns became clear when it was found that the roamers purchased a hot beverage and/or breakfast nearly twice as often as loyals.

Now here’s what’s new in stamps

Above, Canada Post has issued two very nice stamps to commemorate the wedding of William and Kate. Very nice. And in the U.S.. something of an embarrassment as the Postal Service issues a Statue of Liberty stamp featuring the statue in Las Vegas (also a symbol of liberty). Apparently the artist just mistook the pictures for those of the Lady Liberty residing in New York Harbour. But it seems okay. Patrick Henry might just as easily have said “Give me Liberty or give me Debt.”

Toronto Star invites couples to pose tastefully “semi-nude”

It’s come to this. The Toronto Star has started a new feature that will invite couples to discuss their relationships and at the same time pose for tasteful pictures of them “semi-nude”. Here’s the pitch: “By stripping away everything—including clothes—and having couples who are in long-term relationships answer a few questions and pose for a tasteful but revealing semi-nude photo. Of course, we’d provide a fig leaf (or leaves, or something else) to cover up any parts that you might not wish to share with the world. (And, let’s be realistic, not everyone in the world might wish to share.) We’ll shoot the picture inside studios at the Star with a professional photographer, and we’ll give you a really nice, large-format print for you to keep.”

Dolls of South Bayview Avenue

These days one watches his language so we’re eager to make clear that this is about the toys on display outside the Elegant Garage Sale. And that’s it. Furthermore, these china faces have already gone on to a good home.

South Bayview waits to hear fate of 1531

As South Bayview waits and wonders about the large space at 1531, one thing seems very clear. The space to be vacated by Shoppers Drug Mart has absolutely been spoken for. A deal has been done. No other explanation can account for the dead silence which surrounds the future of this property, which is located between Passion Fruit and the CIBC. As we know, there is much speculation that the space will house a dollar store. And just this week Dollarama, the largest dollar store in the country, announced that it intends to expand aggresively — as many as 50 stores within a year. There may be no connection with the Dollarama growth, but tongues will wag after all.
