Man shot, badly hurt, in laneway near Church and Colborne

One man has been shot Sunday afternoon near the corner of Church and Colborne Sts, south of King East. Reports on his condition are mixed but it seems his injuries are serious at the least. The location of the shooting, constructed from fragments of information seems to have been the laneway off Colborne behind a building on Church. The Google image below shows it. The view looks east to Church along Colborne.

Two watermain breaks on Sunday at Bayview and Davisville

A number of residents were scrounging for water Sunday as emergency repair of two breaks was underway at Bayview and Davisville Aves. Workmen said the job would be finished by nightfall.

Vehicle breaks gas line at Bathurst and Ellerslie Sunday

Residents near Bathurst St. and Ellerslie Ave. are out of their homes on this cold Sunday as a gas leak forces evacuation. Police say they are being housed in a shelter bus. The leak occurred when a vehicle, so far unknown, struck a gas line or main. There are no injuries. No timeline is stated for repair so far. The first report is 15 minutes old at 10.20 a.m.

50,000 liters of jet fuel spilled on Hwy. 401 at Cambridge

A tractor trailer collision with another vehicle has shut down Highway 401 in Cambridge and caused a jet fuel spill. OPP say both directions of the highway are closed between Townline Road and Highway 6 South. The crash happened around 2 a.m. Sunday, causing 50,000 liters of jet fuel to spill onto the highway. The clean-up is expected to take several hours and there is no estimated time for the highway to re-open — City News

No winning ticket for Saturday’s $9.3 million 649 jackpot

No winning ticket was sold for the $9.3 million jackpot in Saturday night’s Lotto 649 jackpot. The guaranteed $1 million prize was claimed by a ticket holder in British Columbia. The jackpot for the next Lotto 649 draw on Jan. 16 will be approximately $12 million.

90s music rebirth as Big Wheel cranks Gen Y up to 35 or 40

Lots of fun here with the CBC’s Eli Glasner enjoying the lively presence (return?) of music from the 1990s. The CBC YouTube tag line asks What’s driving the latest ’90s nostalgia? but it’s just clickbait. Glasner never asks or answers it. That’s okay because we already know this revival is about the Big Wheel of Life slowly making all these Gen Y folks middle aged. Good listenng.

Thief ransacks car outside Leaside home at 8.40 p.m. Friday

A man has posted video which shows a thief rummaging through a family car parked outside the home on Bessborough Dr just north or Parkhurst Blvd. Friday night. The writer says the thief went up and down the street. This occurred about 8.40 p.m. which seems extraordinarily reckless of the thief. Not much to see on the video but a cautionary post. Car was not locked.

Woman asks FB how to escape cigarette smoke of neighbor

Facebook as a corporation is accused of many infringements of privacy but in South Bayview there seem to be few things that users are not prepared to share publicly. This day witnesses a growing interaction among neighbors and a woman who is asking for help on how to escape the cigarette smoke created by the people in the semi-detached home next door. There are many sympathetic responses and one man, a general contractor, offers ideas on how to seal the home along the common perimeter. In the end however the truth is posted by another woman who says:  “As long as they are on their property, there’s nothing you can do.” 

10 years of ProAction hockey in Flemingdon marked Sunday

Police and community members will celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the ProAction Hockey League at Angela James Arena in Flemingdon Park on Sunday. Officers from 55 Division, who coach and mentor youth, have seen the program grow from 64 to 148 kids, many of whom would never have had the opportunity to play hockey because of the high cost of the ice time, equipment and league costs. ProAction Cops and Kids was founded by in 1991 by businessman John Bitove Sr. It is a non-profit agency that provides funding for programs that connect police officers with young people. Saudi teen with refugee status lands at Pearson Saturday

A Saudi teen who was granted asylum in Canada after fleeing from her allegedly abusive family arrived in Toronto Saturday morning. Her flight from Seoul, South Korea, landed a day after Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced his government would accept 18-year-old Rahaf Mohammed Alqunun as a refugee.
