Trump would prefer separate deals for Canada and Mexico

John Ivison is seen in the video at right talking about the “arch-protectionist” Donald Trump and how we might possibly win against his worst efforts to pull factories out of Canada. In clip at left, Trump is seen today waxing on about “separate deals” for Canada and Mexico. He would prefer that “to tell you the truth.” Mexico smells like a bigger problem for him than Canada.

A $375K over asking “Bully offer” cinches Cottingham deal

The Globe and Mail reports on the sale of 139 Cottingham St. (just off Avenue Rd. at Sidney St.) which sold for $3,125,000 in February. That exceeded the asking price of $2,750,000 by a tidy $375,000. The condition was that the buyer had just two hours to think about accepting this offer for his century home. It seems to have been easy for him to accept this so-called “bully offer.”

New York Times says Trump “declares war” on US friends

To hear the Trump administration tell the tale, it must hit the European Union, Canada and Mexico with steel and aluminum tariffs to stop Chinese manufacturers from flooding markets with these metals and, in turn, protect American workers. That’s a fantasy. Chinese steel mills and aluminum smelters will keep chugging away, and more likely, American farmers and products like Kentucky bourbon, Harley-Davidson motorcycles and Iowa beef will bear the brunt of these new tariffs — even as the tariffs invite a trade war. US bludgeons Canada, Mexico to get NAFTA concessions

The US is bludgeoning its NA neighbors with stunning taxes apparently in a bid to force them to concede to weakened trade under NAFTA. The decision announced Thursday morning has infuriated Ottawa and triggered the announcement of new taxes on US goods. The US says such moves by Canada, Mexico and the European Union will represent a hit on only a fraction of the huge US economy. In the past however, the idea of punishing Canada has been denounced in many US northern states which rely heavily on trade with Canada. It is an issue that may have political blow-back among Republican voters in states like New York, Michigan, Wisconsin and others. U.S. tariffs on steel are ‘bad news’ for Hamilton, mayor says

Wiles-Bell celebrated at LUC as Bayview summer unfolds

Her many friends in Leaside and at Leaside United Church are preparing to celebrate the years of good work by Tanya Wiles-Bell as she prepares to retire as LUC’s Christian Education Director. You may wish to be there on June 13. Upper right is a reminder of Saturday’s rummage sale at Manor Road United Church. Always fun. Below that a suspicious but somehow loveable fellow ready to growl about the Lawn Summer Nights hi-jinks at Leaside Lawn Bowling Club in July. It is an important event raising funds for cystic fibrosis research and offering hilarious posturing by young professional people in outlandish dress. We like it. Centre right is some yummy looking Lemon Cake available at Today’s Menu on Millwood Rd. Centre left, these shining faces belong to the Leaside High School soccer champs in the TDSSAA Senior Girls AA Division. Well done ladies. At the bottom, events from our friends in East York. Young skateboard fans will want to hit the East York Arena on Sunday for the Summer Kickoff. Canadian Legion Todmorden Branch 10 is running a fundraiser June 10 and bottom left is a preview of the September 22 MGH mental illness “Kick the Stigma” fundraiser, of which more later.

Leaside woman’s first build featured by Property Brothers

The Property Brothers — Jonathan and Drew Scott — will feature the home at 75 Parklea Drive on their popular program. This new home is both the first construction project and the current residence of the builder, Dhaksha Hale, her husband Allan and son Dylan, 5. Dhaksha is an enterprising woman who has followed an impressive career in finance and banking, working with firms like Price Waterhouse Cooper as well as both the TD Bank and Bank of Montreal. Rightly proud of the accomplishment, and with thanks to her husband, Dhaksha says she always straddled the world of Art and Business. Her career path led her from fine arts at York University to Business Management at Ryerson. She started Hale Property Development in late 2016. 75 Parklea Dr was purchased for her to design and build.  She told The Bulldog,  “I had all the flexibility and support I needed from my husband Allan Hale. A truly modern man and my biggest supporter. He believes in the entrepreneur, me and was willing to bet our savings on me.  In fact he left a business and a promising career in Trinidad to be with me in Canada after 6 months of knowing me..I thought he was crazy, what a romantic”.

Rappers feud, Timmy eats eggs (all-day) and primates gone

That’s Aubrey Graham above in blackface in 2008. It is makeup that might threaten the career of even Drake. Hey wait, Drake is Aubrey Graham. Some nasty other-rapper has revealed this. 6ix will surely never be the same.  Check out City News Showbiz. Or not. Then, there’s no record of just how much the father of Tim Horton’s liked his brekkie. But the coffee chain that owns his name has discovered eggs for lunch and dinner. McDonald’s, as we know, adopted all-day breakfast and realized it had been stupid for 50 years. Finally, the black and white Lemur and primate Gibbon (both seen here) have been stolen from the Elmvale Jungle Zoo. There is a $10,000 reward for the animals. Please bring them back.

Leaside owner alert of loiterer at Broadway/Bessborough

Residents of North Leaside are posting Facebook alerts about men seen loitering near homes. One post references Bessborough and Broadway, another at Brentcliffe and Eglinton. At the latter he might have been waiting for a bus. But some details seem concerning. The resident near Broadway says “We have video footage of him accessing our backyard and hanging around by our doors and windows (doesn’t seem to have tried to force the entry though). The weird thing is he will stay in the area for 1-3 hours, and will wander up and down Bessborough and Broadway. The police have been notified, and I spoke to our neighbours so they are aware too as we don’t know if he’s accessing anyone else’s property, but I also wanted to send out a friendly reminder to keep your house and car doors and windows locked, and if you notice anything strange like this or have security video footage, notify the police so they can see if there are any patterns.”
