OPP suspect fatal pileup caused by “brake check” road rage

OPP say the fatal collision which involved five cars may have been caused by what is known to police as a “brake check” — an act of retaliation in which a driver deliberately brakes very hard in front of another driver who may be following too closely or who has somehow offended the braking driver. It is a form of road rage. In the terrible pile up Saturday, police belive the driver who caused it sped away as the collision occurred behind him. The suspect vehicle was a dark colour and had a recently registered license plate that may have included the letters #CE, police said. The wreck happened in the Toronto-bound lanes of the QEW, east of Cawthra Road in Mississauga at around 10 p.m. Saturday night. “This crash happened as a result of what may have been an experience of road rage on the highway that did not involve the victims of this crash,” OPP Sgt. Kerry Schmidt said in an update on social media.

CAUSED CHAIN REACTION

Schmidt said that while a total of five vehicles were involved in the collision, there may have been a sixth vehicle that was indirectly involved, triggering a chain reaction. “Investigators now believe that prior to this crash taking place, a vehicle similar to a Honda Civic travelling in the middle lane moved in front of traffic travelling in the left lane and slowed down, applied their brakes and did what they call a ‘brake check’” Schmidt said. “The driver behind that vehicle then slowed as well to avoid a collision, but the ensuing traffic behind these vehicles triggered a multi-vehicle chain reaction.  “Four vehicles back, a pickup truck slammed into the back of a Toyota that was carrying three occupants, including Nicole Turcotte, as well as another female passenger in hospital and the male driver.” See post below.

Shady bunks in Leaside and Ja Pantry sweetens up Coxwell

A kind homeowner is looking after Shady. The black and white wanderer arrived on his back porch in North Leaside. He says the tag had a Markham address and phone number on it but there was no answer there. Progress Ave Toronto Animal Services suggested the owner may have moved from the Markham address and not updated the tag. If you know Shady, you can find the post on Leaside Community. To the right, these green tea cookies look tempting. They’re from an enterprising new business in the Coxwell business block called Ja Pantry. You get the idea. Below, residents of Summerhill are scratching their heads at the “Tunnel Rescue” trailer that appeared on Roxborough St. West. Anybody know what it is? Lower left, Creeds, newly opened at 1595 Bayview Ave. has posted some Sunday essentials. Then finally, the push seems to be on to pre-sell units at the OUVO Condominiums. Social media has this place all over Yonge St but the address of 2114 Yonge places it at the corner of Hillsdale when its built.

Another Leaside egging, but this time “the boys are known”

There has been another case of eggs being thrown at a home as reported on the Leaside Chit-Chat Facebook account. The homeowner says security cameras at his place caught the offenders and that they are boys known to him. “Our house got egged this eve. Luckily we have surveillance cameras. The boys are known. Not the first time they have been a problem to our home. Deciding whether to tell the parents or police.” There are several responses to this post. Most people seem to feel that he should tell both the parents and the police. One member references the Ontario Parental Responsibility Act. It states that if a child causes damage and it can be proven that the parent did not exercise “reasonable supervision”, the parents can be held liable for the damage. Egg throwers seen early Saturday attacking a Leaside home

CBC says Barry Sherman was in fierce lawsuit alleging fraud

The CBC is saying Saturday that Barry Sherman was engaged in a lawsuit against a convicted fraudster who had allegedly duped the billionaire philanthropist out of a $150,000 investment. Ontario Superior Court documents show Sherman, founder of the Canadian pharmaceutical giant Apotex, intended to invest in an app called Trivia For Good, which described itself as a “mobile-trivia app that offers huge cash prizes. The principal of this scheme is named by the CBC as Shaun Rootenberg, the former interim chief financial officer at Algoma Public Health. He faced charges of fraud over $5,000 in relation to funds allegedly taken from people he met on a dating site. Toronto Police said in June, 2017, that Rootenberg operated on eHarmony as Shaun Rothberg. The CBC says that Sherman was introduced to Mr. Rootenberg by Myron Gottlieb. He was a partner with Garth Drabinsky in Livent

Centre left, Avoca Chocolates on Millwood Rd. is making tempting sparkly-sugar blue coloured truffles for the  Blueblood Steakhouse at the Casa Loma. You can get them at the Avoca shop too. Fibe comes to Leaside wth surprise deliveries to back yard

Many readers are commenting on Leaside Community this Saturday in response to a man who came home to find a large cable spool in his backyard. He believes there’s an easement for Bell and others to work back there when necessary. But he wondered just what was happening. It appears to be the arrival of fibre optic cable (fibe) in Leaside. A crew was busy Saturday morning installing a fibe box on Millwood Rd. at Sutherland Dr. outside the little plaza in the 900 block. At right, we see the unholy blockage caused in 2014 at Millwood and Bayview Ave. when fibe came to the Davisville side.
