200,000 Ontario PCs will elect party leader on March 24

The Ontario Progressive Conservative Party will hold a leadership race ahead of the June general election, the party’s executive committee announced Friday. Earlier, the caucus appointed North Bay MPP Vic Fedeli as interim leader. All 200,000 members of the party will vote on March 24 on a new leader to challenge Liberal Premier Kathleen Wynne. But officially, the race hasn’t started yet. Party president Rick Dykstra said the time frame will be established later. The move contradicts an earlier decision by the party’s caucus that MPP Vic Fedeli would serve as permanent party leader through the upcoming election on June 7.

Bombardier called the decision “a victory for innovation, competition, and the rule of law.”

SUPER BOWL ADS

Canadian viewers will still be able to watch American ads when they watch the 2018 Super Bowl on American channels February 4. In a ruling dated Jan. 24, the Supreme Court of Canada rejected Bell Canada’s request for a stay of a CRTC regulation allowing U.S. ads to be shown on Canadian airwaves during the NFL championship game. That means the CRTC decision will almost certainly stay in place for this year’s game, pitting the New England Patriots against the Philadelphia Eagles.

The owner of Terroni restaurants, Cosimo Mammoliti, and the Cumbrae’s butcher, Stephen Alexander, owner of the enormous Bayview Ave meat and sandwich shop, will join to open a 20,000 square foot store and restaurant in the soon to be completed Montgomery Square development on the corner of Yonge St. and Montgomery Ave. It is the site of the former Postal Station K, a heritage building saved by forward-thinking builder the Rockport Group. Competition cops sue Ticketmaster for “deceptive” prices

Canada’s competition regulator said Thursday it is suing Ticketmaster and its parent company, Live Nation, for allegedly misleading consumers on the prices for sports and other entertainment tickets. The Competition Bureau said an investigation found that Ticketmaster’s advertised prices are deceptive because consumers wind up paying additional fees that are added later in the purchasing process. The bureau called the practice “drip pricing” and said it results in consumers paying higher prices than advertised. The regulator claimed that Ticketmaster’s mandatory fees often inflate the price by more than 20 per cent, and, in some instances, by over 65 per cent.
